If you want good food DO NOT EAT HERE! Dinner was revolting, reason? they serve Brakes food!!! All mains were around £20-£22, each one costs around £2 when supplied by Brakes. I ordered parsnip Wellington, sounds classy? It was awful. The vegetables were almost raw and the cabbage was gritty. The wellington pastry case was almost empty. They replaced it with tomato penne with a thing in top, supposedly chicken in breadcrumbs, indescribable!! Meals ordered by rest of party, terrible. A waitress admitted that they have a huge number of complaints. At reception a staff member admitted it is Brakes food and pulled a face!! Don't risk it, you will surely regret it!!!
We arrived for our one 0’clock booking for lunch today . First of all, we go to the main restaurant and had to hunt for staff to be told by the three women sat there, oh it’s in the bar today . We go to the bar and again had to find a member of bar staff , who nodded us through to a pretty room. We were not given a window table as requested. We were given two menus and then….. well nothing . We gave up at 12 minutes past . So disappointed. Two men were popping in and out with tea cups and milk jugs and totally ignored us . No offer of water or anything . Perhaps if the three ladies sat in the main restaurant had helped , we might have been served .
The food was OK in general except we were given stale bread at £2 per slice. The service was hit and miss and seemed very chaotic. Also they did not provide the food we asked for and one meal had to go back to the kitchen. I mentioned the problems to the waiter and he said sorry about that but don’t believe anything was reported back to the chef or whoever is mango g the restaurant, from what we saw maybe nobody. We will not be eating there again which is inconvenient as we have another 6 nights left.
Afternoon tea didn't live up to the standard of its setting. It started off well as the tea and coffee were good. But, more care could've been taken when making the sandwiches because they were inconsistently shaped and the smoked salmon was so tough it was inedible. The cakes were nice but the scones were dry. Service was a little slow but that may have been because there was a wedding happening on the day of our visit. We arrived excited and left a little bit disappointed.
The entrance way was not particularly clear as it was poorly lit, however the venue in general was very nice. The buffet offered quite a random selection but it was all fresh and hot and tasty. Service could have been more polite and careful, as coffee was spilt on several people's laps unfortunately. Overall the evening was enjoyable, however there is room for improvement.
The building is impressive and don't be put off by the very negative comments on here, the restaurant staff are clearly very young and inexperienced but we all had to start somewhere! Food in restaurant is OK, not great but reasonable value for money. I had fish and chips, which is hard to get wrong and was OK. Partner had sea bass risotto - which is hard to get right and wasn't great (fish looked like it had been on pass a while and risotto was very wet). No charcuterie for starters (there is a Tesco half mile away) and no samphire for risotto (it was supposed to be a key ingredient) was disappointing. Waiting staff are very attentive (almost a little too concerned) to point i suspect manager has told them about recent negative comments!
If you are in market for weekend break don't be put off - it is good value and next time I am bringing my golf clubs
Afternoon tea was overpriced, very slow service and loads of dirty plates had not been cleared. Poor experience overall, which does not reflect the grandeur of the venue. At least our concerns were resolved in part by one member of staff who tried his best to make the experience more positive.
Staying at Dunston Hall for a mini break. The breakfast is the best ever. Hot English cooked / cereals/ croissants/ toast/ ham and cheeses/ fruit/ yoghurts. Something for everyone.
