I've been buying here for the best part of 20 years on and off.
Reading recent reviews about the chips being so poor.. Unfortunately it's accurate.
Perhaps they've starting using cheaper potatoes, which aren't meant to be used for chips, either way the chips aren't what you'd expect from a chip shop, I had to check they weren't oven chips, but they do have bags of potatoes in the back that you can see. Something is completely wrong.
I always get on well with the staff.
In years gone by I would have rated 5* in an instant, as the food used to be excellent.
Going there is meant to be a treat, but it has been a real disappointment. Especially as it has been so good in the past.
Getting chips right for a chip shop is pretty much fundamental basics.
I don't know if they check their reviews, but if you do... Please change it quickly before you go out of business. It really can't get much worse.
I'd like to return and be pleasantly surprised.
Terrible place. 15 years using it and it has got worse and worse. Had a still frozen pancake roll 2nd time that happened. The chips are mostly uncooked and raw. Just become horrible and bland with zero interest from the staff to fix the issues .. As for hygiene, found hairs in my food and had a member of staff sneeze over my food once. Avoid like the plauge. Discusting place. One star as it should be a minus not rating it at all.
So inconsistent unfortunately, occasionally their chips are lovely but 95 percent of the time their greasy and enemic. However, to put into context I've only had their food 4 times max
Tried it even though reviews had not been great. Obviously I was wrong, I was only getting chips, but not great, just about edible. Not sure what it is they get wrong, old oil, oil not hot enough but something. Chips were greasy, strange aftertaste, not so much undercooked as insides were soft. Even had day old chips reheated in the oven taste better.
The chips are either greasy with excess oil or anemic white,on a bad day the fryer can give you bad bumwees,of another chip shop onped nearby,would shut this place down easy.
Fantastic menu choice, fish and chips, burgers and a Chinese selection too, very reasonably priced and generous size portions, friendly staff. Cooked fresh t order and not matter what day of the week are always busy. Do Lunchtime and Senior Citizen specials too. Would highly recommend. Spare rib meat just falls off the bone in a delicious BBQ sauce, a definite must order!
I bought sweet and sour pork balls and plain boiled rice when I arrived home put the food on a plate to find the meat tasteless it looked like the meat was given a quick defrost before it was cooked the whole meal went in the bin and I bought a nice beef curry from my local takeaway. I will never buy a meal from the Cavalier Fryer again
Perfectly nice staff chips were ok the cod on the other hand was not great. I’m always a bit suspect of fish and chip shops that also do Chinese think you need to stick to one thing and do it good. Gotta say the curry sauce wasn’t that bad !!!
