Visited with two of my good friends. All first timers here... and first timers with African food!
On stepping foot in the café we were instantly greated by the owner and chef Oumar. A huge, warm welcome and love was showered onto us all.
The café is decorated with African colours and culture in mind. Very informal and fun. We arrived just after opening.. so very quiet.. but it does get much busier later on. In fact it would be a great place to grab a bite to eat after a night out.
The atmosphere was very relaxed and thanks to Oumar we all had a great experience.
Now... the food.
Clearly made with passion and love.
We chose three different mains and were given two complimentary appetisers!
Fried dumplings - sweet, crunchy outside and soft on the inside. Similar to seaside donuts... but no hole in the middle, not covered in sugar and far more tasty! Quite dense and filling!
Fried, caramalised plantain - slices of sticky, slightly burnt (on purpose!) caramalised plantain.. similar to banana.. but not the same! Very tasty and a real treat.
The mains...
Lamb dibi, chicken yassa and jerk chicken.
The dibi and yassa are very similar. Ingredients are peas, carrots, beans, potato, sweetcorn, caramalised onions and dijon mustard to name just a few! The meat is seasoned and gently spiced with flavour. Both dishes are mild, yet very rich and flavoursome. Served with a mixed rice that had red beans in it too, made for a great accompaniment.
All tasted fresh and were very filling! Luckily the food is served in a cardboard takeaway box... so we took the leftovers home!
The jerk chicken - marinated for 24hours... so the chicken has absorbed all of the flavour from it's seasoning... a deep, smokey and rich flavour. The option of melted cheddar and chips made this a guilty pleasure! The chicken was cooked perfectly - juicy on the inside.
Varied soft drinks are available from the self service fridge. All chilled and ready to go!
Summing up. An African café that delivers amazing, authentic food coupled with one of the friendliest hosts I have ever met which equals a superb evening.
For three of us the bill was £42. Well worth it. None of us were left hungry and we will definitely return... and probably some takeaways/deliveries too!
Thank you Oumar. Much love to you brother. uhibbuk أحبك
My go to place when needing some food whether it’s after work, night out or after a long day. Food is always made to the best quality, never had any issues and the owner is always interacting with customers, has a laugh and easy to talk to. Only good things to say to this place and he always willing to help anyone in need like getting them a taxi to go home
This is twice now that me and my partner have been charged incorrectly by this place. First time it was 100£ for 1 meal, we rang the next day and they argued that we offered to donate to charity which is a lovely thought but completely untrue! And I got charged 27£ last night for 2 portions of cheese chips. When I mentioned it to a group of friends, they all said theyve had similar experiences so I'd definately avoid if you go there after a few drinks because they will absolutely take advantage
One does not simply go to Cafe Baraka one must experience it.
Warm atmosphere, great food and service. You'll leave happy, fed and appreciated.
My partner & I visited this place a day ago & OMG...the food is to die for!
The chef himself is so welcoming & makes you feel welcomed!
The banter between us just flowed like we had known each other for years!
Omar, your food is awesome & we intend to come back again soon, as he is now my brother from another mother! Lol! ????????????????????????????
Oumar the owner is probably as big a draw as the food. We sat and watched through the door our food being freshly made, and OMG it was amazing.
We were given a warm welcome by the loveliest couple. And after we had finished our food given a tour of the kitchen and lavished with tales of the owners life..
What a breath of fresh air..will be back soon
Great Place. Great guy. Food is 100% and genuine man who wants nothing but the best for his customers and community. Would definitely recommend
Exceptional service, amazing food, cannot fault whatsoever! We went for my birthday meal as I fancied somewhere a bit different with some spice and this place did not disappoint……I would opt for the spicier option next time but the normal option was full of flavour and delicious too. Vegetarian options are available and are delicious too. My toddler enjoyed her Mac n cheese, plantain and dumplings too. The guy was super friendly, full of personality and nothing was too much trouble either. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!
