A small free to park National Trust gravel surface car park in a woodland opening. From here you can walk down a narrow lane for twenty minutes past a few cottages downhill to the dramatic pebbly and rocky beach which has an interesting Lime Kiln history. Be aware though that the last part down to the beach is a very steep slope but you can still admire the view of the beach and seascape from the well positioned seat just before the steep bit. There is also a good moderate circular woodland walk from the car park which joins up with the coastal path.
I am reviewing this carpark and the beach at the same time as I am guessing people want to know if it's worth down for the beach. Well I'll tell you I like the place!
There is nothing there, no toilets no icecream shops, no cafes, bars, restaurants etc. So the car park is reallysuper nice with lots of tree cover so the car doesnt get too hot.
The surface of the car park is excellent. Its flatish and made up of a satisfyingly gravelly hard surface but not pock marked like some car parks or pot holed. Important to me as well as the very tight entrance which is precisely 2417mm in width. I measured it first as I was in the Huracan.
Which will stop wider vehicles like caravans and vans etc so its a car park to park to go to the beach. Not for caravans or large vans.
The beach to the carpark walking is an 8 minute walk max so you just walk down the very quiet road with a river running along side. Very nice very Devon.. People say its very steep. I mean its fine just a bit steep at the end but its a road. It's completely doable unless you are on Oxygen.
I recommend it. Last minute addition! There is a very small waterfall ifyou can walk 50m on a pebble beach. Not exciting at all, but lots of people get pictures there. I
To the beach. We took the Patterdale and she loved the beach but smaller dogs would hate it. This is not a sausage dog beach. Its very rocky, grey sand in places, fragile cliffs, no surfing or those jet skis etc.. just waves on large pebbles and boulders against an awesome crumbling cliff.
Park at the free car park but you have a 10 minute walk to the secluded beach but be aware it is quite a steep decline down (and back up again!) But when you get there there is a small opening on the pebbled beach where you can let the kids play. The waterfall there is also a nice surprise!
It’s a small car park with limited spaces but from here, you have several options to explore and hike; or just visit the beach and village. There were signs of broken car windows on the ground - whether from break-ins or some who looked them self out - I wouldn’t leave anything in your car when you wander off. It’s worth mentioning too that there is a width restriction and wider vehicles may not get past the bollards.
Free car park for easy (albeit steep) ???? access to the coast path. But that's why we were there.
Bucks mills is a coastal village over looking Barnstaple Bay and the Atlantic Ocean at one time a lime kiln, only a short walk from the free carpark .
Beautiful place for a stroll and a swim. Gorgeous. The beach not the car park obvs. The car park is larger than youd imagine and well maintained but it's nothing to write home about.
Car park is free.
There is a wood to walk around giving lovely views of the sea.
You can also walk down through Bucks Mills and onto the beach only draw back is that it is very steep.
Well worth a visit tho.
