My husband and I stayed here a couple of weeks ago and we loved it. The room was large with wonderful antique furniture. The four poster bed had a very comfortable mattress and pillows. The television screen was the largest we've ever had in a hotel room... brilliant! There was also a fridge which always comes in handy. We enjoyed our stay so much that we are hoping to go again next month.
The room was dirty especially the carpet I wrote my name in the dust! The shower was nice and hot but as the shower tray was blocked we couldn’t stay in it for long otherwise it would overflow!
There was no TV remote and when asked they just said it will be in the room somewhere.
Went for breakfast on Sunday at 9:55 after we had not much sleep as we where all evacuated by the police knocking on our doors (not one member of staff to be seen for fire drill, no tick list on guests to check everyone got out safely!????)due to a fire down the road (Obviously no fault of the hotel’s) we where told the kitchen is closed now it closes at 10:00 on Sunday! She said it is in the room on an info sheet. There was no sign of this in our room. We was told if we paid cash it would be cheeper, so we did £160 I expected a full English breakfast. We arrived late on Friday evening after a 7 & half hour journey and all our wedding family where staying here also which is why we stayed 2 nights.
All the other guests had complaints too, one had no towels, another guy had the whole glass glazing panel fall on him from the window????‍♀️ Good job it didn’t fall on a child! it was a massive window! He showed us the photos. Also no plug in a bath. I do not recommend this place at all.
It makes Faulty Towers look like a five star!
First visit was okay, room was large but tired, second visit had requested a ground floor twin room but ended up with a first floor twin room, very steep stairs and a large step up to the room itself, not good for my 82 year old mother. Beds were comfy enough and the shower was great but the toilet had a full length window right opposite which had frosted glass, we were not convinced that it was effective with the light on so ended up putting a towel up to protect our privacy. Room itself had no chairs and the wardrobe was a cupboard behind a mirror which was too deep to actually use. Nowhere else to put clothes. Room was supposed to have a fridge but didn't. Breakfast was not included but we decided to try it anyway. Consisted of Frosties or granola with milk and full English breakfast, tea or coffee from a flask which was warm, not hot, and toast, no choice of white or brown. When asked if I could have poached eggs on toast instead of a full English was told no, only fried eggs. Orange juice was fizzy, suggesting it had been there for a while. Location of this place is great and there is plenty of parking, although it is very tight, but overall was not happy with my visit this time.
There is something very odd about this place. It is in pole position in town but is wanting in the extreme. It has rooms and a restaurant, but no reception as such, with staff at the end of a mobile. Those that I and a friend met - late at night, fixing us Irish coffee, and early morning, providing breakfast - were professional and charming. But Dear God, the rooms! Already allocated, with our arrival time specified, they were, in early January, freezing. A pleasant but inexperienced member of staff switched on the heating which took half an hour to kick in. The lock on the door of my room didn't work and I was less than certain given stray hairs and pubes that the sheets were clean. In my friend's room, neither the shower nor the kettle worked. The owner needs to carry out a thorough appraisal of what he/she is offering. The room prices were a joke, £80 -£90 compared to what could have been obtained for half that price else where. A real shame. Hitchin is a lovely little market town that deserves better from this establishment, particularly given its position in the centre of town.
Had a pleasant stay. The bed was comfortable, the bathroom was good, huge TV, nice breakfasts but Frosties instead of Corn Flakes. Lots of safe parking round the back.
There was however no information about breakfast times, or any information whatsoever in my room. I had to ask a resident.
Hotel staff friendly and bed was really comfortable but the room itself was quite outdated with a few cobwebs and old leather furniture. In room 36 there was a bright green emergency light by the door that was switched on at all times and we found it hard to sleep as the bed was opposite the light which kept us awake. Also, the light from the hallway came through under the door, also keeping us awake. The sky light above the bed was a lovely feature of the room as well as the fridge. I think had we not experienced the light issue it would have been a much more pleasant stay.
Worst place I have ever stayed in.. filthy dirty. Air con not working, god knows when it was last serviced. No mattress or pillow protectors. Bottom sheets dont fit. Curtain missing on one window, other curtain only hung on 2 hooks with dip in middle. Changed room. Curtains OK, but still very dirty. ...bed the same. More cobwebs than Raiders of the Lost Ark. Could be lovely, but owners have no interest. The restaurant was pretty empty, so you would think this is where the money is but they obviously can't be bothered. Never again !!
When I booked this hotel I rang to confirm that we could have the jacuzzi bath delux bedroom. A very nice lady on the phone confirmed that we could. When we arrived it felt it a strange to have to phone a number to be let in, but thought no more of it as it was also a restaurant. We settled into the room and after a while my wife needed to have the bath to relax. After getting tried to start the jacuzzi and nothing happened. Tried several times without luck, so went down to the area we were booked in at. The young lady asked if we had tried a things and answered we had. As she didnt know whet else to do we went to find the owner. When she asked about the jacuzzi he immediat response was "no it doesnt work". My answer was we had booked this room because of the jacuzzi bath. His response was unbelievable " you have the jacuzzi bath, but we dont allow the jacuzzi to work because it disturbs the other customers". After I again pointed out this was why we booked the room, the next answer was even better, "well you can have your money back and go somewhere else if you want" Although it was getting late we did manage to find a far better hotel 17 miles away, which actually treated us as they were pleased to see us. This is the first time I have ever moved out of a hotel after checking in and the first time I have ever given a bad review.
