Popped in for brunch and had lovely food. Location is great and worth a stop just for the view..
I knew about this building but presumed it was under private ownership. I was therefore delighted to find the grounds open and to be able to get a close up view. It really is an impressive building with a great view towards Macduff. I was also very impressed with the sculpted trees which added real character to the place. It is well worth a visit if you are in the area, a great sense of history.
The current Banff Castle is a Grade A listed building that was built 1749-1751 by John Adam on the site of the old castle. It was rebuilt for James Ogilvy, 6th Earl of Findlater and 3rd Earl of Seafield as his town house. His principal seat was Cullen House in Cullen. The Earl owned land in and around Banff and administered this from his new town house.
Well worth visiting if you love local history, enjoy architecture, or enjoy panoramic views.
went to craft fair today Easter Saturday ???? and then for a cup of tea next door reasonable prices only opened recently enjoyed the morning ???? ????
Beautiful castle in the city. That's the place where the Araucaria tree was planted to commemorate San Martin's (Argentina) stay in Banff.
Banff Castle reminds me of Nottingham Castle. Both have an inside which is a C18th building in parkland, whilst the medieval defences can only be seen from the outside. If you just walk through the gate of Banff Castle you’d be forgiven for thinking ‘what castle?’. But walk around the parkland, behind the C18th building and the medieval defences are revealed in all their glory. High walls atop deep earth ramparts, all atop a steep promontory. This was a very defensible site. The river below was one of the few natural harbours along this coast, which made the castle important for centuries.
Lovely area but wall need repair
