As a location for hillwalking or a walk by the reservoir this is a great location.
The views are stunning all around.
Opened in 1969, Backwater Reservoir links with Lintrathen Reservoir, 2½ miles (4 km) to the south, and supplies water to almost 300,000 people in Dundee, the towns of Angus as well as Coupar Angus, Blairgowrie and the Carse of Gowrie.
The 800-m (2625-foot) long dam wall retains a man-made loch 2 miles (3 km) in length, containing approximately 25 million cubic metres (883 million cubic feet) of water.
The project was initiated by the Dundee Corporation Waterworks in 1964 and absorbed into the newly created East of Scotland Water Board in 1968, before final completion and the official opening by Queen Elizabeth II on 9 October 1969.
Scottish Water are the present owners and operators of the reservoir, following the amalgamation of the East of Scotland Water Authority with the West of Scotland and North of Scotland Water Authorities to form a single company.
Backwater Reservoir is located within Glen Isla. The reservoir can be reached by taking the B951 turn-off from the A93 (around 5 miles south of Spittal of Glenshee) to the north-west, or from the A926 at Kirriemuir to the south-east. The perimeter of the reservoir forms a popular walking route.
This is a big area of gravel to park on, plenty of room for cars. There is a picnic bench over a wall behind the parking. A plaque commemorating the dam opening by the late queen is on the wall. From here easy to walk across the dam. A locked gate stops access to the grass area beside the overflow. There are two further car parks on the other side of the dam and reservoir which offer better views.
Fantastic open space for a walk around a fantastic dam . Lots of nice views and on a cloudless day is breathtaking.
Great walk around the loch, but unfortunately the trees were all down in the woods that take you to the other side of the reservoir, this weekened and looks like it will take some time to clear
Not been here for years. Its not changed.
Lovely place to walk the dog.
Visited 54 years to the day , dam opened , only realised when taking pictures, great views all-round
Nice peaceful setting although the circular route round the resevoir appears impossible currently due to fallen trees. Nevertheless, you can still walk up one side and get a decent walk.
Spacious carpark and some lovely views. Great place for a dog walk.
