Perhaps it is unfair to give this location only because we never actually had to do the opportunity to do business with them. We looked them up on their website and went with the intent to rent a pontoon to do some fishing. This was mid day in mid-July. We pulled in and found the sketch looking office. We parked and went up to the office to find that it was closed. There was a sign saying to call for service so we called and got no one. The call eventually transfers us to what sounded like another business but again no one answered. Luckily we found another boat rental place up the road that had several pontoon options for us since we drove quite a ways to get here. If you intend to use this place make sure to call in advance.
I was looking for a place to stay this Thanksgiving and realized we stayed here for a week a few summers ago and it was terrible. The guy who runs it is not exactly a "people person". The bathroom door was broken and the neighborhood the cottages are located in is not very nice. We spent a couple of hours cleaning and it was much cleaner when we left then when we arrived and still didn't get my deposit back. I should've called but the guy was so rude I didn't bother. I've been going to HL for 47 years and this resort was by far the worse I had ever stayed in.
They are currently renovating their chalets. New appliances, countertops, and flooring. New paint too. Just missing a few items like rug at front door and bath mat, mirror in bathroom. Furniture is a bit old. Light in hall was missing and the ceiling fan in one bedroom didn't work. Our 5 adults, 2 children and 1 dog fit nicely with room to move around. There's no dishwasher but not a deal breaker for a fishing cabin. People were nice for the most part. We were accused of taking 4wheeler keys but we didn't even rent anything like that. With all the rain, the property was quite saturated. Glad we brought our own lawn chairs, hand soap and tissue too. Lake is nice but a bit shallow. Never found the fish but had a good time anyhow!
Where to begin? We were told check in would be at 6 pm instead of 3pm because of extra cleaning w/ Covid. Unfortunately that must not have included removing cobwebs, dead bugs, and live ants. The toilet wouldn’t stop running unless we lifted the lid to fix the flapper. Not enough water pressure for a girl to rinse her hair. Couldn’t spit your toothpaste in the sink because it barely drained. Paid extra for air conditioning but it didn’t go below 80 degrees the first night. The roof had a tarp covering it because it leaked. Was told we had leave a $100 deposit to make sure dishes were washed and trash taken out. Yet when we went to use the dishes, we had to wash them before we used them because they weren’t clean. And to top it all off, when my son opened up the sleeper sofa, there was mildew and mice poop. No linens either. Yes, the owner and Jo were friendly and welcoming but that can only go so far. It’s no wonder they were the only place with a vacancy sign.
Brought the kids and dog fornthe weekend and we were very happy!!
The owners were great very friendly. The cabin was immaculate which is very important especially during this time. We rented a pontoon and had a fantastic ride! The boat was clean and very easy to use. Thanks!!
This was a great cheap place to stay while at houghton lake! Art is very nice and accommodating. We have been to other small cabins for the same price (one where we had to hang towels on bathroom door to close the gap so people can’t see in) new appliances were added. Beds are just like every other cabin bed. Basic cable horse shoes volleyball pontoon boat and atv rentals. Great price for the 3 days we were there. He said they are starting to renovate for next season and we are excited to see the improvements next year. Very convenient to all the restaurants and shops!
Stayed here with my dad and aunt for a couple days and I have to say I really liked it. Inside the cabin was very pretty and it was all very clean. I had no problems at all with bugs or truly anything. The owner was very kind and helped us with any questions we had. I felt very comfortable and safe there and I feel this place should get more credit. I do highly recommend this place to anyone looking to get away no matter what time of year.
I've been here 2 years in a row with my parents and we LOVE it! This summer we brought a group of friends along and we had a BLAST! The cabins are rustic & comfy & it's a short walk down to the private beach. The water is warm & clear. We even get to bring our Great Dane Duke along for vacation since he's part of our family.
