Nice outdoor location. Papaya salad was good with lots of crunchy bits, we had an assortment of nonalcoholic drinks (I had the strawberry cream soda) which were all quite good. But the star was the ramen! I had the beef, and it was so tender and flavorful. Great attention to detail with a perfectly cooked egg, crispy tofu, and all the right toppings.
We visited during high season, the decision to seat a party of five at the bar was a bizarre choice, but at least we weren’t turned away.
The food was delicious.
They have a nice patio where the wait for a table is not bad.
To be fair some of the delays were due to tourists walking away from the place -the staff goes out of their way to honor the spots- in a perfect world people would be ready to seat at first call.
Yum! This ramen was delicious, and the view was incredible!! Such a great atmosphere with great staff and gorgeous scenery. Also, if they have the yuzu caramel cheesecake, get it!! It was one of the best cheesecakes I’ve had!!
Amazing location for this restaurant. Covered patio is well done. Our service was fantastic.
The food was presented well, but we found all dishes lacking in flavor. I know people have different taste preferences but it needed spices. All 4 people in our party agreed on this.
Ama is always booked up, and now I understand why! I was lucky to get a reservation while in Kauai, and it was truly worth it. The ambiance is warm and inviting, perfect for a relaxing evening. The service was exceptional—definitely some of the best I’ve ever experienced. The Poke I ordered was incredibly fresh and delicious. I’ve already recommended Ama to several friends visiting Kauai. It’s a must-visit if you're in the area!
Pros:
- Great atmosphere
- Enjoyed the ramen noodles
- Nice fire pit
Cons:
- Expensive for the value
- Ramen broth lacked body
- Why are your Bao Buns so expensive?
- $20 Mai Tai? Ouch!
- Fine dinning with paper napkins and wooden Chinese takeout chopsticks
I get it… a trendy ramen house in Hanalei is going to be expensive. Then i would also expect the ramen to be outstanding. The ramen looked great but the broth lacked any kind of body or flavor. Why are the black mushrooms so sweet? Why didn’t they include a seasoned eggs instead of this soft-boiled one? Why is the chashu pork so mushy and flavorless? These were the questions i was asking myself. I did like the noodles though. They had good texture and flavor. Just wasn’t a fan of the broth. It was almost like they just added dashi powder and soy sauce in a pot of boiling water. Disappointing.
The Bao Buns were good but why are they so expensive? $22 for 2… why?
Overall, we were disappointed with our dinner, and felt the quality was compromised to maximize profit. An average bowl of ramen with a big price tag. Not worth it.
Wonderful ambience, and warm service. The peanut butter dessert was a standout. As others have referenced, the ramen broth was a bit bland, and could have used more salt and overall richer flavor. The veggie ramen broth was much better and more three dimensional.
Reservations recommended, though the long separate line for walk ins did move quickly and they all got seated for the 5pm turn.
Ama Ramen is a beautiful restaurant. Service is friendly. I loved the decor and the mountain views; however, I didn’t enjoy the food. I ordered a Oyakodon ramen and my husband ordered dan-dan mazemen ramen. The presentation of the meals were lovely. The Oyakodon ramen literally lacked flavor (spices and salt) it was as if I was drinking water with no flavor of chicken whatsoever. The chicken was also served on a skewer which I’ve never seen before in a ramen (tells you a lot about the authenticity of your dish). The chicken being on the skewer is fine but the chicken had zero flavor, it’s as if they just put it straight on the grill without a thought of adding any spice. Also, the egg tasted like water. My husband’s Dan-dan mazemen was supposed to be dry noodles but it was quite wet with some broth, and it also lacked complete flavor- it just tasted like cashews. The only “sauce” they offer to enhance flavor to your dishes is a sesame-chili oil which is literally just sesame oil. I wouldn’t recommend anyone to come eat here if you’re looking for authentic ramen. We also ordered a Brazilian limeade which was complete sugar. They overdo it on the sugar but nothing on the spice. The Bao buns are also overpriced, almost the price of your entree. The restaurant is definitely beautiful in looks but the taste of the food does not reflect the ratings here on Google which I don’t understand. Save your money and go elsewhere where the food is much tastier !!
