We eat here every couple weeks or so. The sushi is good and the staff friendly, and we never have to wait for a table. Bento boxes and tempura also good. Main downside is that either the grill is not cleaned often or well enough or they aren't changing their deep fry oil - the oil smell is often a little off-putting.
Sitting at the sushi bar is always fun, and I think we actually get better sushi when talking to the chef's especially if they think you are really interested in the fish (as opposed to some of the more fancy creations). Good prices, one of the few places I don't mind taking the family too regularly. Did I mention the friendly staff?
In absolute terms Naomi sushi is better, but its also more expensive and a little more upscale - I feel like I can come to Akasaka as I am without upgrading my usual work-at-home dress.
The sushi was tasty and they had a lot of options. Their staff is like a big family; everyone has known each other for many years. The couple that opened this restaurant came to America from Korea over 20 years ago and opened Akasaka in 1995. They are very personable and welcoming. Before I left they asked for my name and said, "So, we'll see you tomorrow?" I would definitely go back.
Delicious sushi - very fresh fish, generously cut (no skimping!), and really good attention to detail - the chef clear takes pride in their work.
Also, they're very gluten-free friendly and happy to take special requests - just ask!
No. No. No. Just drive the extra 15-20 down to Mountain View or up to San Mateo for more authentic Japanese food. Slow service, over priced food, poor ingredient quality, and shabby decor. No thank you.
The Udon was terrible and seriously had 3-5 TINY pieces of chicken in it. We are talking about dime sized chunks here. Extremely salty too and not much noodles or veggies either. I would have been better off just cooking a packet of udon myself at home.
Service was not great and we could see our sushi rolls (and other customer's rolls) sitting on the counter for 5-7 minutes before they were served to the table. The waitress would go to the sushi chef and take it off the top of the counter and put it on the lower part where patrons would normally eat off of it. She would then walk away, return to the table and THEN bring customers the order. Why?? In terms of efficiency this makes no sense. The fish in our rolls was also not fresh and I felt that both sushi and udon were given the quantity and quality (freshness) of the ingredients.
I'm all for trying out places I have never been to but I definitely do not plan on returning here. The bay area has a pretty high bar for sushi and Japanese restaurants that Akasaka does not meet.
Super impressed. Even on a Monday the fish is so fresh. The roll combinations are inventive abs delicious (luxury roll has a great combo of crunch/macadamia nut on top). Don't skimp on the fish. Wish I lived closer
I have been going here for about 10 years. That should tell you something. My kids have grown up here and this is where they had their very first sushi.
While it's kinda a mom & pop type place it's still good and one of my favorite places for take out when I am in the area.
Really nice staff but the sushi is average/below (I think their meat is old). They also don't have basic rolls like spider or Philadelphia but they do make it upon request.
We got the Vegetarian Special Box Dinner (6 pcs kappamaki, vegetable tempura, vegetables and tofu) and we were so disappointed! 6 little cucumber makis, bland soup, uncooked tofu and a boring salad. The only nice surprise was the delicious peanut dressing!
