It was the largest suspension bridge in the world from 1849 until 1851. The Bridge is a suspension bridge spanning the main channel of the Ohio River at Wheeling, West Virginia. The bridge was a very interesting engineering piece of history. We wanted to see the bridge but it was under renovation. They were doing bridge repair, so the bridge was closed to motor vehicles. We could only walk on one side of the street near the bridge and get some good pictures. Hope it reopens.
The Wheeling Suspension Bridge is a nice local landmark and great spot for a walk. The bridge was built in 1849 and has so much history to it. Near the entrance, there’s a sign that gives a lot of helpful information about the history and construction of the bridge. They were actually doing renovations to the bridge when I was there, but that didn’t hinder the experience. When walking across the bridge, there’s great views of the city of Wheeling, the Ohio River, and Wheeling Island. It’s a cool landmark to visit if you’re in the area.
This bridge used to handle two way traffic but currently going under maintenance. There is a new bridge for cars but people can walk in the suspension bridge. It’s a nice experience to visit this location.
This is a really cool stop to make on a road trip. I really enjoyed that they closed the bridge to vehicular traffic so you can safely walk along the middle of the bridge. Unfortunately Wheeling looked almost like a ghost town with how few people were around and how many shops were closed down and abandoned.
Beautiful 100 some years old Bridge. The wind blowing on the bridge is amazing feeling. It's like nothing else in Wheeling. It takes about 5 to 6 minutes to walk across into Downtown Wheeling
In all fairness, the place is about to be renovated. Pretty run down cosmetically, but it was cool to walk on bridge suspended over the river.
I love downtown wheeling and the suspension bridge is no exception! I think it's a wonderful part of Wheeling and such a cool thing to see and experience! I often use it for my photography as it gives such an amazing feeling to any type of photos and the sun sets perfectly over it giving the most gorgeous golden hours ✨
What an extraordinary piece of architecture. Although it’s currently shut down to vehicle traffic, it’s still open to foot and bicycle traffic.
The views that it provides to the waterfront and South Front Street of Wheeling Island are beautiful. Spanning the Ohio river, you won’t regret visiting and walking this once in a lifetime piece of history. Built in the mid-1800’s , a chance to see, touch and experience such history can be once in a lifetime.
