My wife and I went there this evening and were pleasantly surprised! We had the Red Dates Chicken feet, the Braised Tofu with Black Mushroom and Snow Peas (a.k.a. Hong Suey Tofu), and Eggplant in Special Sauce.
Hong Suey tofu - very good fragrant flavor, crunchy peas, tofu well fried, mushrooms are fresh. Sauce is tasty with a slight garlicky flavor.
Eggplant - slightly seared and very nice texture. Firm and succulent. The sauce has a nice flavor with a hint of Chinese 5-spice powder, and a slight tangy tinge...almost orange, slightly sweet, slightly salty. Great balance of taste!
The chicken feet were very well prepared. It was tasty and fragrant. Not too sweet, neither too salty. The meat was nice and cooked. The marinate was very pleasant to the palate. It certainly is better than the quality we had gotten from several different restaurants in Chicago's Chinatown and Chinatown Square.
We were visiting my mother-in-law near Lansing. We came to Grand Rapids this morning to run an errand and to pick up a couple of things at a Vietnamese market.
When we were walking into the market, we noticed the BBQ meat hung at the window of Wei Wei Palace next to the market. We thought my MIL would appreciate a few pick-me-ups to snack on. After finishing our shopping at the market next door, we went to the restaurant to pick up a couple of things my MIL would seldom have living on a farm outside of Lansing.
We got half a roast duck and 1.5 lbs of roast pork to go. While hostess / waitress / BBQ meat chopper was preparing our order, an apparent long time customer walked in and started speaking with her in Cantonese. When she handed us order, I said thanked her in Cantonese. I think she was pleasantly surprised. I had placed my order in English as I wasn’t sure what language she might speak (Mandarin, Cantonese or Vietnamese) and I didn’t want to be presumptuous even though the BBQ meats sold are Cantonese cuisine.
I admit that I held a it-is-what-it-is attitude approaching the quality of the BBQ meats we bought given where we are from. However, we were pleasantly and delightfully surprised how good they are. Although the skin of the roast pork could be a bit more lighter and crispier, it still packs a good crunch. It probably lost a bit of the crisp from the condensation in the takeout box during the hour ride home. The roast duck was tender and very flavourful as well.
We are very happy that my MIL thoroughly enjoy them.
Excellent authentic Cantonese style Chinese food- hard to find these days. Great selection, recipes and flavor. I grew up enjoying Chinese restaurants in San Francisco Chinatown back in the day and this food is the real deal. Suggestion- stuffed green pepper and eggplant diem sum!- among other delicacies. Atmosphere and decor -authentic style ( not “gentrified”.)
We got the hot and sour soup, beef fried noodles, garlic bok choy, and the honey walnut shrimp and all were a 10/10. The mains came with a side of rice each.
The star of the mains was definitely the honey walnut shrimp. The shrimp was fried to perfection, almost fluffy but super tender. The walnuts were perfectly crunchy!
The only con was the service, but if you can overlook that, everything else was amazing and honestly could rival the Chinese food in NY.
Also, extra plus they have real Siracha!
Wonderful place, delicious food and very friendly service. Recommend the BBQ pork noodles
Rare Cantonese restaurant in Southwest Michigan. Foods and dimsums are great. Congee which is rice porrige is good option for quick and warm fine meal.
Good Chinese take out! The sesame chicken had good quality white meat chicken, and the hunan chicken was really good. I was also impressed with their fried rice. Sometimes other places give fried rice that is not great and just seems cheap. Not this place. The fried rice was great! We will likely go here again
The beef ribs are fantastic, as are their bao. We got the Sesame Chicken and five orders from the dim sum carts, we ended up leaving with a ton of food left over! Lovely meal, lovely staff.
