Officially the "Bi-State Vietnam Gold Star Bridges" but commonly referred to as the Twin Bridges (which is odd because they're different lengths), they carry US-41 over the Ohio River and join the communities of Henderson Kentucky with Evansville Indiana. Both bridges are entirely in the Commonwealth of Kentucky thanks to the New Madrid earthquake of 1812 which changed the course of the river.
The northbound bridge opened in 1932 and the southbound more than fifty years later in 1965. The southbound will be decommissioned in a few years when the Interstate 69 bridge is opened in 2031 and the northbound will be converted to two-lane traffic.
Standing 100 feet over the river, the main span of these cantilever bridges are 720 feet long. There was once a toll but it was removed in 1941.
It’s almost unbelievable but these rust buckets continue to work, conveying travelers seamlessly from IN to KY and vice versa.
What can I say about this bridge? It jams up often with backed up traffic, lane closures. Needs painted. Is the only way in and out of Henderson connecting directly to Evansville.
Everybody goes 60mph on this bridge and push people to go faster especially when there's construction and it gets scary. There's been a wreck already recently
