Best KPortal Reviews
The food here is absolutely phenomenal. The staff were so accommodating for example I asked if my coconut monkfish curry could be made with more spice, and it came out with the most beautiful kick to it. The food was genuinely 5*. At first we thought the service was a little slow but as soon as we even tasted our starters we all agreed it surpassed expectations and was well worth the wait. The steaks were melt in the mouth, cooked to perfection, and the tomato kids pasta was stunning.
My 4yo had wanted to meet the chef to say thanks for her pasta and he happily came out..nothing was too much trouble.
Fine dining quality with a homely atmosphere.
Enjoyed a breakfast here on Easter Sunday. The eating area quite ambient, breakfast ingredients were all tasty, and the service was very good and efficient. The price was reasonable, although slightly more than shown on the sun inn website menu.
I’ve been to the Sun Inn on several occasions in the past and never been disappointed. Having not been for a while (near 2-3ys) we decided that we would return for a nice family meal. ||It has clearly been taken over and has lost its way from what it once was. ||The staff are all very young and inexperienced. There was no offer of taking us through the wine menu or offer of any specials that could be ordered from the kitchen. ||We ordered the oysters however when they arrived they appeared dry and didn’t look like they had been freshly shucked in the kitchen. We didn’t finish them and left four uneaten. The bread came with a lovely sauce however no spoon so it basically went uneaten… ||We ordered steaks which both had to be sent back to the kitchen. They were cold and raw in the middle|Our second steaks arrived and the cooking of them was poor however we decided just to simply persevere through it and simply wanted to get through the meal by this point. Little to no flavour and didn’t appear to be cooked in butter ||The sauce for the steak is clearly from a packet and was extremely watery. ||We ordered ice cream for the children and the order was wrong… even though we asked two members of staff. ||Overall I felt the staff looked downcast, the morale levels were poor and the atmosphere has completely diminished from what was a fine restaurant. ||The setting remains nice with the lovely open fire but there are certainly areas of improvement required such as the men’s toilet. The floor feels like it’s about to give way! ||A better chef, quality of food produce and some staff training is much needed. ||I hate to write poor reviews however on this occasion and with the cost per head extremely high (same as central Edinburgh) i feel it’s a must. ||Hopefully this place can get back to where it once was. We won’t be returning in a hurry however!!||
Last minute booking.
A very warm welcome from the staff.
The room was cosy and well presented.
Tea & Coffee included.
Bathroom needs some TLC.
Breakfast the following morning, spot on.
The Full Monty was delicious, just beat me.
Will certainly return when in the area.

Stayed one night at the last minute, room was great, very unique, lots of character! Staff were fantastic and friendly and the food was delicious. Convenient location on the main road into Dalkeith and Edinburgh.
Best Steak I've had in more than 3 years in Scotland!! Just melted away. The service is excellent, staff friendly and I will gladly encourage everyone to go to The Sun Inn, brilliant.
Pleased to find The Sun in open & still serving, we both ordered the fish pie. It was appox 40mins we waited for our meal. The portions were significantly reduced since our last visit but it was tasty all the same.
Unfortunately, within an hour of leaving The Sun Inn, mum had to run to the toilet with an upset stomach & in the next half hour, I was doing the same. Mums stomach was still upset the next day.
We hadnt eaten anything since breakfast time that morning so we could pinpoint the problem to our evening meal.
I phoned the Sun Inn to report this & was given an apology & told nobody else had called in with this problem, that the fish is delivered fresh every morning & it would be reported to the manager.
Smaller portions, bigger prices & some form of food contamination is enough to put us off returning.
The staff were great and it was clean and cosy. However I was disappointed at my "Pig on a plate" I paid £32 for. Tasted nice, but I had to order a bowl of chips to go with it. I expect to leave full after paying £32.
