The food was gross. The chili rellano was like a dog treat the menu said it was an egg roll wrap style..... wrong it was dipped in flavorless thick batter and the cheese was like a cheap cheese stick the chili was dry and old. The salsa had no flavor. Tacos were disappointing my daughter doesn't like taco bell and said theirs were better. Unclw bens makes better rice and thats gross. The only thing that was really eaten was the Sopapillas to be honest you have to try hard to mess that up. The lettuce and tomatoes were fresh and the bar tender that helped me was cool. I will never go back. Very sad.
Order the popular Quesorito with Barbacoa. They are all delicious, but something about how they cooked that Barbacoa makes it special. They cover it in cheese, and smother it for a juicy treat!
Price: 7
It is on the more expensive side for Mexican, but there is a la carte that is reasonable for budget eaters.
Atmosphere 5
It is grungy with bad lighting. It is reminiscent of a dive bar, with sports and many tvs. It is a cross of dive bar but with some solid Mexican-American food. Interesting atmosphere and concept.
Quality 8
This is above average Mexican-American food. Delicious Barbacoa, carnitas, and Carne Asada options. Their signature dish the Quesorito is large, delicious, and full of flavor.
Quantity 9
The South has large portions across the menu. Even drinks are bigger than standard. If you are hungry or thirsty, this is the place to do it
Service 9
The service was great, but nothing over the top. Attentive, friendly, and kind. Everything you would want from a server.
Amazing restaurant in Englewood, Colorado. 51 years strong! Same family ownership. The South Restaurant perfected a menu taking care of guests that has endured 5 decades. ???? ????????
Wow! What a great spot! The Quesorito was great with the barbacoa... The green chili really good
I had a wonderful second experience at The South Restaurant! What a vibe. The bar is filled with locals and regulars 24/7 who are always engaging with the bar staff and return time and time again for their hospitality, strong drinks, reasonably priced beers and exceptional comfort food.
Lainie was awesome. I manage fine dining restaurants and have a background in high-volume concepts for michelin restaurant groups. She knew the products, personalized the experience to me and my preferences, and was spot-on with checking in, despite a very crowded bar and a full restaurant when I arrived. I see why the locals returns time and time again for her attentive and down-to-earth hospitality.
The food was awesome. I never would have ordered a burrito with French fries, but alas this was Lainie's favorite and it really worked! The texture was spot on, the fries weren't over or undercooked, and actually added a lot to the "everything" burrito. I imagine this is actually not that easy to nail, especially at the volumes they are doing. I really enjoyed it.
Chips & Salsa: delicious! And a huge indicator of what the food is going to look like. Attention to detail and flavor, but approachable for everyone (the hot salsa wasn't too hot, the mild was actually mild and had a lot of flavor). I eat a lot of salsa and finished two salsas... so if you're like me (salsa lover), order a second one!
I'm a bit of a cocktail snob, and during my first visit (not with Lainie) was a bit sticker shocked on the price jump for a sweet and sour marg with Corazon. I had asked for Casamigos, but was given Corazon (they are the same price here). During my second visit with Lainie guiding the experience, I decided on a bartender poured rocks margarita (still with sweet and sour) but they were strong and $7. Their well tequila is 100% blue weber agave and not bad, so I wasn't excited to upgrade again. I prefer fresh squeezed lime juice in my margs and I'm always willing to pay more for it with a mid/decent Blanco tequila. At this place they do what they do really well, it's not a craft marg bar, so I had a better experience embracing it for what it is.
I wish there was at least one mezcal in their bar program. It's my go-to. I get it may not be popular, but at least one bottle would be nice. Price isn't of consequence, but it is a growing category and there are a lot of fun/creative things that can be made with the spirit.
Really great experience, genuine hospitality and fun sociable locals. Thanks Lainie, I'll be back... New Local fan :)
Good food, solid service, mostly locals and regulars. I had the tacorito (it has a new name) and a taco and a side of green chili. The green chili was quite good actually. Service was friendly and attentive. I will go back, they have a whole page of sandwiches too.
This restaurant is one of my son's favorites. I am not a big eater. So when I order something I need it to be really good. When I ordered a cheese enchilada a la carte I was disappointed. I was assured by the waitress there were onions in it. There were not onions in it. There was too much cheese and the tortilla was hard. Nothing special about the flavor. I don't think I'll be returning to The South for Mexican food. And since I don't eat meat, I don't see me eating at the South. Service was good at 4:00 in the afternoon on a Friday.
Amazing old school restaurant with delicious Mexican food. This place feels like a piece of Denver history. Drinks are great, service is top notch, and I devoured the “Original Quesorito”
