At the bar. Felt uncomfortable with the locals constantly swearing and barman swearing just as bad. Not a kid friendly place. Good prices tho. Also vaping inside.
Unfortunately this beautiful old building desperately needs renovation inside It felt a bit like a 1980s hotel but cost double the price! There is no parking at the hotel so you have to find a residential street to park in not easy if you have a large car as streets very narrow. When we arrived we had to fill out a lengthy form then we were handed a key and told where the room was. Was advised no Breakfast even although we had paid for B&B we did receive a refund. The room was up quite steep stairs the fire exits were open, which is a health & safety issue. The rooms are extremely basic and need a lot of work done to bring them up to date. There were 2 coat hangers so not great! Showers were extremely small. Bar area seemed to be a typical man’s pub. I could not get a signal at all on my mobile in the hotel. I would not return to this hotel. It certainly is over priced.
Dee the owner, was very friendly on receiving us. The room itself was a twin room, adequate size, beds were comfy, bathroom very small. Room was just above the bar so it was quite noisy up until closing time. The WiFi wasn't the greatest, kept dropping out. Was disappointed as breakfast wasn't included in the price but when I booked it allegedly was!! Because of these issues, I scored low. Just be aware it is not a bed and breakfast like stated.|We went into the bar for a drink whilst Celtic were playing Rangers on tv. One of the customers quite abruptly told my companion to move as he couldn't see the tv. Would I come back again? I would if breakfast was part of the price like stated. But until then, I'm sorry to say no as I do like Bed & Breakfast. As a side note, Dee did offer cereals and toast for an extra £5 each but I do prefer a cooked breakfast.
We were looking for accommodation in St Andrews but found it too expensive. Anstruther is only a quarter of an hour away and the royal was cheaper. The staff were very helpful and friendly. The building is old. The rooms and bathroom facilities were reasonable. The rooms were quiet and the beds OK. ||We are very 'connected' travelers and the WiFi facilities were terrible. In the bar a slow internet connection was available. To connect in our rooms we first had to connect with the modem in the corridor, and with a bit of luck a trickle of data could be obtained in the rooms. Switch to cellular? No - no signal in the room. ||Breakfast was OK but basic -only the friendly service could compensate for that.
Awful, awful, awful. We arrived and told the room was not ready,we came back a couple of hours later. We were then told that we could not get breakfast as they had no chef. I didn't know you needed a chef to prepare a continental breakfast. However the gent reduced the rate accordingly. |We were given our room key,and we got to the room, oh dear. Uncomfortable beds, soap scum on the soap dish in the shower, ilfitting blinds caked in dust and dirt, TV covered in dust, a noisy room in the morning, with shutters going up from nearby shops.|When we checked out we told the young girl, and she said was, Sorry.|Wouldn't recommend this place to anyone.|Dirty and hospitality was awful.
The room was ok. It was clean but a few wee tweaks like the drawers wouldn't open and we had to take them out. But it didn't ruin our stay here. The hosts were lovely and I think that's the positive vibe from the hotel. I.think the owner needs to update a few things for the guests especially the WiFi! You have lovely hosts with Dee and her partner so make it an asset to get your hotel better cosmetically . You are in a fantastic spot in anstruther. Thank you Dee
My husband and I stayed in Room 6. It was clean and fresh apart from a false nail that I found on the floor next to the shower. Although our visit was in June 2023 there was a notice stating that the room will not be serviced if you stayed more than one night “because of covid restrictions”. The mattress was of rather poor quality and not particularly comfortable although the one in Room 3 seemed much better. The stairs up to the bedrooms are steep and fairly narrow and this could be a problem for some people. I had thought that breakfast was include but there was an additional charge of £5. This was a reasonable charge for what was on offer. The hotel does not have a carpark but there is free parking about 300 yards away. The details about the hotel stated that it has a restaurant but it does not, just a very basic breakfast room. Overall the accommodation is okay considering the cost but I would not stay there again.
We never stayed here this time.|We had family over from Germany so it was a family get together.|The last 3 years we have used the Royal hotel to meet and have a few drinks.|The first time the staff were great and happy for us to use the tables up from the bar and even made us some sandwiches which was great.|I'm not sure what the issue was this year but the lady at reception was abit off, we are not a drunken family there were to small children present so were not rowdy.|The lady's attitude the whole time we were there was very dismissive like we were in the way forgetting of course that we were buying drinks so not just sitting and not buying anything.|This has put us of going back there next yr as I'm sure there are other places in town that would be happy to take our money.
