Best KPortal Reviews
The staff and their service is exceptional, prompt efficient service by welcoming staff. Family booking in the restaurant located at rear of pub, comfortable clean area with decor to give the room some character. Quite a large menu choice so there's something for everyone, vegetarians/ vegans catered for too. The restaurant is family orientated so children welcome and catered for. The meals are plentiful, we all left with full bellies. Usual range of alcoholic and soft drinks available at the bar, food and drink orders are table service.
Introduced to the Malt Shovel in 2013. Been coming on multiple occasions since and always have a good experience. Food is incredible, good sized and delicious. Staff are always welcoming and profesional. Constantly recommend to friends. Great little hidden Gem that deserves the recognition. Thumbs up from me. Well done all, keep up the good work.
Pleasantly surprised. I found this place after searching for a wheelchair accessible restaurant close to where we had an appointment. We were lucky to get parking as this establishment has a small car park off a residential street, but the actual pub restaurant is small but lovely. The staff and patrons were friendly and the food was plentyful, hot and delicious. Dad ordered the 2 fish and chips expecting 2 small fish in batter; although, they were huge and as a self proclaimed fish expert said it was delicious (he usually complains that fish is never a good as down south). I had the chicken balti which again was well presented and delicious. I really can't fault the place.
What a lovely place...Food was amazing !!
Me and my fiancee got taken here for our birthday's by a friend.
The service was top notch from the young lady who served us... The food was genuinely fantastic quality throughout... There was 7 off us dining and all chose different items and although very busy the food came out quite quickly.
Booking is essential as they only have a small dining area.
We traveled from the other side of Birmingham probably 25 miles however we will definitely be going here again soon..
I had the mega mixed grill and it was touch and go whether I'd finish it, from the first to the last bite it was the business ????????
My fiancee had the lamb shank and she swears it's the best she's eaten anywhere.
So book in advance and treat yourself to a quality night out... Even if it's a way to travel, on my experience its will worth the extra money and effort.
I'll have to get the young ladies name next time and add it as she did an excellent job looking after us..
Thank you
Booked here for a birthday meal, but had to wait ten minutes or so for our table. It was very busy so this was understandable and my partner was pleased to find they had Old Speckled Hen as well as Doom Bar. Chose mushroom and brie wellington and my partner had pork. Although the menu said this was served with stuffing we had to ask for some. I was disappointed to find out the stuffing wasn't vegetarian and I also had to ask for a Yorkshire pudding. Like many pubs the Malt Shovel doesn't seem to understand that a Wellington is not the same as a pie and typically the vegetarian option was substantially smaller than the meat options. Roast spuds were barely browned, green beans were cooked until mushy and although the pie was scalding hot the plate and subsequently the rest of the meal was nearly cold. We waited a very long time for the dessert menus as by then a group of 11 had arrived, and gave up waiting for them to take the order and went to the bar to place it in the end. Clearly they need more staff at peak times. The pudding was delicious but the portion was a bit small and the ice cream was exceptionally cold.
Excellent food excellent service excellent value!!!
Phone reservation, check-in and ordering was a breeze in a clean environment and welcoming atmosphere... We were allowed to choose any available table in the garden patio (where there is a kids park as well)
Our roast beef Sunday roast arrived 3 minutes after we ordered and things went downhill from there... The beef was dry on all edges as if it had been set under a heat lamp for an hour or more... Lightly covered in gravy and accompanied by over cooked vegetables.
After one bite I requested the manager replace the meal with anything else on the menu with no refund required... ( I am not fussy and would never return a half decent meal)
I was informed this was how roast beef is served and sent back to my table where I ate none of the meal.
I requested horseradish to mask the dried beef and was informed it was unavailable only to be brought some later.
Several lovely young staff, however uninformed, checked in on us with full plates sat in front of us.. we expressed dissatisfaction and they seemed unaffected or unable to handle the matter.
On departure I dared to enquire with the manager on how the manner was handled... And was affirmed that this is how roast beef is served..
He offered a refund at the end of our one hour unpleasant stay, I was grateful.
If you are looking for a good pint, garden, child's park and atmosphere... This is your place.
If you are looking for food accomodations, I would highly recommend elsewhere.
Great little pub / restaurant in a nice location with friendly atmosphere.
However. Service was slow. I know they were busy though. Staff were very nice, polite and professional. Just not enough staff on shift at the time I think.
I was disappointed with my meal. It was meant to be a vegetarian chili/sesame noodle dish with halloumi. What I got was a bowl with noodles, some vegetables and soggy halloumi swimming in a sea of some kind of soy sauce mixture. This was basically inedible. I filled up on the side portion of chips. Was not worth the £16 or so that I paid.
Others in my group enjoyed large portions of steak and chips and so on. Clearly this is what the Malt Shovel does well.
So really, a nice place, just in my case, shame about the food.
