The toilet and King Henry VIII hunting ground demarcation stone tour was exceptional. The guide was very knowledgeable and I totally enjoy the tour. It was very interesting to learn that the stone marked the end of King Henry VIII deer hunting area from Ash to Hampton Court. It explains why the stone can not be moved and the pub was built on top of it. Amazing and this is a must do experience and totally free.
This is a dying breed and what a find, a traditional British pub, fabulous food, drinks and service, with a brilliant atmosphere, if you want fine dining then stay clear, it's good holesome plentiful food, with excellent service, a pool table, music, sports and a landlord who takes no c@ap.
We stayed in our motorhome in the car park, so didn't see rooms but met a group of 7 men who had stayed and go there every year, they said the rooms were basic but fantastic value for money and very clean.
Absolutely loved it and so much so we stayed 2 nights, we NEVER do that, was great x
The landlord is 84, been in this pub for 43 years and he couldn't do enough for you, what a gem and the locals are extremely welcoming. We will be back,
Room tired, bathroom very tired. I had to clean the shower in the shared bathroom before using. Not enough loo roll and no bristles on loo brush.
Room was clean and staff were friendly and helpful. I was late arriving but the barlady did still make me some food.
Fried breakfast was great. Not bad for the money but probably won't be back due to the bathroom and number of bedrooms that share it.
Came to a party that was held in the back room . The welcome was poor by the bar staff . The room had seen better days , mould on the walls, barman constantly disappeared. Cash only in the bar of the room but card only In the main bar in the pub which sold beer on tap ! Jukebox was paid for upfront , which was a disaster ,no one seemed to know how it worked ! Numbers 1 and 4 didn't work , so we were limited on choice . Considering the free juke box cost £40 was a rip off . Advertised a free rental of the room but actually cost £50 for the barman that was hardly there , £50 for the cleaner, and then £40 for the dodgy jukebox that didn't work properly , it actually works out a very expensive hire for a dirty venue . I felt sorry for the person who was 75 who paid this amount of money. Its an absolute disgrace .
Met for a (private) function in the back room. Service from staff was very good. Didn't go into the main pub, so couldn't comment.
At 1st glimpse it is like stepping back in time. The landlady has described it exactly as it is. A no frill pub which must be remembered it’s a pub not a hotel. It is very basic and there is room for improvement but it will be a pity to destroy the feel of the place. |When we arrived we were greeted by the landlady who was very polite. She showed us to our room and said if there was anything we needed to give her a shout. |We could not get over that their kitchen never closes. We had to walk through the kitchen to get to our room and the kitchen was clean and tidy. |It is a shared bathroom and again is old as is the pub. |There is live music most nights do it is worth checking if you want a quiet night. |The regulars made us feel very welcome, chatting away. There was also some people practising folk music who invited us in to join them. It was lovely. |Nothing is too much trouble for this couple who run this pub. Asked for a fan and she gave me hers out of her office. |The landlord is 83 years old and cooked our dinner and breakfast. They both work very hard.|If your are looking for a modern stay then choose a hotel but if you are not fussy and looking for tradition and history then stay here. |I think it how you approach things that can make things good or bad |Thankyou for making us so welcome and we hope to see you again.
Would give this 0 stars if I could. Room was riddled with mould and filth. Wood is rotting and room absolutely stank of cigarettes. They keep prisoners in better conditions than this. Beds were grim. Lay my own towel on top of the bed and slept on that with no cover as was all so horrible. Don’t think the TV remote has ever been cleaned
If your thinking of staying at the lion brewery please be very cautious! The rooms are very dirty and dated! Rodent droppings visible around skirting in public bar and strong smell of urine in rooms even tho you have to share a bathroom with other rooms. Bedding absolutely filthy and stained!! Topped off by very creepy owner who thought it was ok to enter our room late one night whilst we was sleeping. Most uncomfortable experience I have ever stayed. I don’t normally write a bad review but I absolutely felt this was necessary to warn others. It’s a thumbs down from me! Please be aware if you have young children. This place needs knocking down and redeveloping. I wouldn’t stay here for free. Be aware owners become very aggressive and argumentative when i tried to point out some of the issues. Left after first night with no refund.
