I love finding proper old pubs, I live a walk of an evening when I get parked up and was pleasantly surprised to find it wasn’t just a boutiquey type eat only establishment. I’ll be back, thanks for the hospitality and also to the chap with the cocker in the corner for attentioning my empty glass - see you soon ????????
I spent the first night out camping, which is free. I arrived after the pub was closed and decided to setup camp in the back. I took a day break here on my coast to coast. As I awoke the next morning it was down pouring. The Owner came to check on me multiple times and was extremely kind and welcoming showing me around the place. I spent my last night in the hut and it was absolutely wonderful and well worth it! Making yourself a hot cup of tea, charging your devices and a warm clean bed is all ones needs. The huts are cozy and well kept and the locals at the pub were friendly. Plus there's a shop to restock less than 5 minutes up the road
Camped in the garden here for free as a Coast To Coast hiker (perhaps 50 mins walk beyond Richmond centre, right on the trail). The landlady and landlord were very friendly as were other punters in the pub. There's a shower room and toilet around the back which was very nice. They weren't serving food the evening I was there but they set us up with the local takeaway and let us use their dining area, cutlery etc. and we ate like kings.
I am Guinness. Coast to coast. Very fun

Hubby turned up there yesterday end of day 4 of his C2C run/walk. The pub is shut for the foreseeable future although no one had gotten in touch with him to let him know. He set up his tent in the garden that he had pre booked. No meal due to it being closed, although he had booked. No hot water in the toilets and the shower was too dirty to use. He got a taxi into town and had a meal there. Not sure when it shut, but they did have his contact details to let him know. I hope they let others know before they turn up as at the end of a long day that has been planned for a long time it's not ideal.
We stopped here on the Coast to Coast walk and slept in one of the shepherd's huts. It was cosy, clean, and warm! Bridget made us a delicious dinner and breakfast and made us feel so welcome. We had a great time! Great shower for campers to use.
After reading a review on this place I decided to push on from Richmond and camp here. As soon as I arrived I was greeted by a member of staff who quickly showed my round the site and facilities. Once I was pitched and showered I popped into the pub for a drink where I was greeted by all the locals who are so friendly, camping was free with the use of the bar which was an added bonus.
Stayed in the shepherds huts here for 2 nights whist touring the country on motorcycles. They are well priced, clean & comfortable. The Staff look after you well and apart from being Northern the locals are alright too. Great little pub with a great atmosphere, highly recommended!
