My wife and I were expecting food more in line with a cabin county dinner club but found food preparation that would have fit in at a minneapolis neighborhood bistro. The menu has a good variety of options at a variety of prices. We had take out pizza the first night of our vacation and were pleased by the scratch made crust and quality ingredients. We ate in the restaurant on our second trip and were very pleased by the space between tables and care that the staff were showing with masks and cleaning. The food was nice, we had a starter of calamari that was done properly with a light crust and was cooked just until tender. For the main course my scallops were well seasoned and cooked just enough for flavor while still firm and sweet. The truffle risotto was creamy and delicious. My wife's walleye was done perfectly and the pistachio crust on top added texture and flavor. Her wild rice was cooked to a wonderful texture. We finished with a very satisfying tiramisu that we shared.
Prices were low for the quality of food and the cocktails were well made and served quickly. The wine list is basic but well chosen and priced right
When we arrived the restaurant was just opening and the dining room filled quickly. Our waitress was happy and friendly despite being the only one. The pizzas were very good and the walleye sandwich was the best in town. We liked the atmosphere and the fact we could hear each other.
This place has so much potential. I'll start with the good. The stone work (rock fireplace and stone exterior are impressive). Large parking lot, easy access, and large bar, including many tap beer choices. Salads were fresh and tasty. Pizza was good. Server was friendly and attentive. Unfortunately, the dining experience was incredibly poor. When we arrived at the time of our reservation, our table was not ready. It took 25 minutes to get an appetizer. Then took another over an hour and fifteen minutes to get our main courses. Two of the dishes were poor. One dish had a criminally small portion. Another lacked the ingredients the menu claimed were in the dish. We had to specifically request the item and the server even seemed incredulous that the kitchen was that inept. Prices are high, particularly for a restaurant outside of an urban area. There was no tap beer menu present. Liquor drinks were relatively unimaginative and menu could be improved significantly to list what liquor options existed. The server seemed to know our dining experience was poor but did nothing to toss in an apology (eg a free dessert?). Overall, maybe this was just an off night for the restaurant, but I have little interest in returning.
Made a reservation and we were seated immediately. Friendly staff. Attentive wait staff. Food was great. We had the sausage & pepperoni pizza, Thai pizza and the walleye Cobb salad. The pizzas were delicious and cooked perfectly. The salad was fresh and walleye perfectly cooked. Will definitely return!
Absolutely fabulous Dinner there on Wednesday July 15th. We had the seared tuna appetizer and it was so delicious. Cooked perfectly and the sauces were so complimentary to the flavor. Then we had the pistachio crusted broiled walleye with wild rice that had a super light cream sauce and vegetable. It was all cooked to perfection. We sat outside on the patio and really enjoyed ourselves. The meal and service were outstanding! We’re from the Minneapolis area and I think I’d plan my next vacation up in the area just to go there again. We complimented the chefs on the way out then talked about it all weekend. Highly recommended!!!
The atmosphere and food are excellent. The only thing that could improve is that they are under staffed which I am sure is due to location and the difficulty in finding quality workers. With that said the staff that is there is excellent. They work very hard to make your experience enjoyable. Most of all, make sure to order dessert. My wife truly goes to The Headwaters for the chocolate cake!
Food is generally good but I thought the prices were a little high. I've been happy with the dinner menu but was disappointed with a Philly cheese steak I ordered my last visit. The cheese looked and tasted like something out of a squeeze bottle rather than cheese slices. Most of it simply dripped out before I could eat it.
The Headwaters is a gem in Northern Minnesota. The food here is outstanding along with the atmosphere. We order the seafood pizza every time to share and it never disappoints. I usually stick to seafood when I visit as the quality is always spot on. Great cocktails and an extremely friendly staff. Worth checking out even if it’s a bit of a drive!
