I found The Gables through a last-minute booking after a dismal night at another B&B elsewhere and was so, so glad to have discovered this lovely place. Barbara and Mike are very friendly, welcoming and helpful owners who do a great breakfast in the lovely front sun-room. My room was small (and advertised as such) but just right for one person, with one of the comfiest beds I've ever slept in and a very nice private shower room just opposite. There's private on-site parking, which is a huge bonus when travelling by car, and the house is really easy to find, just off the main road and a short walk to St Austell town centre. A really happy experience all round. I visit Cornwall at least once a year and had been looking for a new "base camp" after my previous favourite B&B closed — I think The Gables will have to be it! Many thanks and I hope to be back again before too long!
We were met on arrival by Barbara who provided a friendly Cornish welcome. Our room was very clean and well equipped everything you would need for your stay. Breakfast was good home cooking and varied. The guest house was easy to find, just off the main road and only a short walk into the town centre. If you enjoy good Cornish hospitality this is definitely the place to stay. Thank you for our lovely relaxing stay.
We booked this VERY last minute due to another holiday falling through - we booked last Wednesday and headed down a few hours later!|We expected to arrive no later than 7pm, but we arrived late due to a few more toilet stops than expected (that’s pregnancy for you!) and a road closure with no diversions in place. I think we were about an hour late but they seemed fine about it, we were very apologetic though. ||We were greeted by Barbara who made us feel welcome and showed us to our room - “Poldark” - that had a separate bathroom, just opposite the room. I thought not having an en suite would bother me, but it really didn’t. ||The room was very clean and cosy, and had ample space for the things we took. Decor was cute, and had a homely feel to it. The bathroom opposite was small, but was large enough to dry yourself after a shower, so didn’t really need to be much bigger, and again was spotlessly clean. |The guest house is on an A road, and we had the windows open at night and we did hear traffic.. but where we live we literally hear no traffic whatsoever so I think any noise would have been obvious. Given we were out all day, and we’re busy, we were inevitably tired at night so any road noises didn’t really bother us and we were sound asleep in minutes anyway.||There is a choice of 3 breakfasts - full English (inc a veggie option), pancakes (highly recommended, I don’t know what magic Barbara uses, but they’re so yum!) a lighter option of fruit, cheese with a couple of bread rolls, and in addition, a table with a selection of cereals and croissants etc. My partner and myself had all 3 throughout the week we were there, and found ourselves not really needing lunch so portions are good too. Breakfast is served in the conservatory, which did get hot when the sun was out, so maybe eventually, some blinds might be an option.. but that is a LOT of windows so no doubt a LOT of cost! ???? There are lots of windows though which can be opened to let a breeze in. There is also a nice garden to look out on whilst eating too.||Both Barbara and Mike were chatty and friendly, which again I found part of charm of the place, much more welcoming and it helped make the place feel more like a home from home.||Location is good too - a short walk into town and only a short drive to the Eden Project and the Lost Gardens of Heligan.||All in all, a very enjoyable week here and we wouldn’t hesitate to book again ☺️ |
We stayed here recently and it was delightful. We made a last minute booking, 20 minutes before we arrived. The owners were polite and very helpful, the room was clean, bright and airy. We had a lovely 2 night stay which was just what the doctor ordered. ||We will definitely stay here again and have already recommended it to friends and family
On arrival, we were met by Barbara, who was very friendly and most welcoming. Our stay was made much nicer by how accommodating and friendly Barbara and Mike were. Our room was very clean, and attended to each day. The breakfast was varied and filling.||||The location of our stay was great, with short walking distance to the town and other amenities. A short drive took us to local attractions. ||Thank you both, we look forward to returning.
The owners were so friendly and accommodating, the rooms were clean and comfortable. Breakfast and afternoon tea were delicious. Could not fault this place, great little place to park the car and not a long walk to the town. Fudge the dog was a wonderful addition too! Would recommend anyone wanting to stay in this area to stay here! 10/10!!☺️
Barbara and Michael were perfect hosts. The room was very clean, comfortable and well-equipped even having a four poster bed. The tasty breakfasts offer good choice and served beautifully. One thing - if Michael tells you that it is not going to rain, then take a waterproof!!! Will definitely stay again.
