Went in with my grandchildren and a friend who had a stroke recently for lunch. The cafe was busy but as we entered there was a free table on our right. As we sat down a waitress came to clear the table and abruptly told us we couldn't sit there as it was reserved. I said oh sorry but it didn't have a reserved sign on the table. My friend struggled to get back up, the tone by which the waitress spoke to us ment everyone was now looking at us. We turned to leave when a very kind gentleman offered us his table. We thanked him and went to sit down. The waitress saw we were sitting down at the new table and shouted loudly across the room, 'oh you can sit there but I won't be able to serve you for sometime and your food will be ages!' The whole cafe went quiet, everyone staring at us again. Feeling belittled and unwanted we got up and left never to return again!! The waitress had no customer service skills and was just plain rude. As, my friend on her walking frame struggled back out through the people standing in the cafe, the lovely man who had given us the table followed us outside and said ' Sorry, but I know a lovely garden centre cafe not far from here and gave us directions.' What a lovely man thank you for your kindness, we had a lovely lunch in the end not in this cafe. Kindness, being polite and treating your customers with care even when your busy costs you nothing.
I wouldn’t come here again..
As my first time in Danbury, there wasn’t much options of places to eat. I’d walked in here in hope of having something for brunch, and seeing it attached and working aside the deli, expected decent dishes.
The place looked run down. I’m assuming it was suppose to be a vintage style tea room, but it needs a deep clean, some redecorating, love and attention.
Don’t get me wrong, the Lady was friendly who served me, but she was either busy doing something on her computer or round the back in the kitchen, having a conversation with another member of staff, loud enough for the few customers in the front to hear, about someone who was asking general questions about the place and probably wasn’t satisfied either.
I was close to just walking out without paying, but had the decency to pop my head round and ask to pay. So attention to customers is needed, checking to see if they need anything.
I had eggs Benedict and a mocha. I wouldn’t say the meal was worth 8.95. The eggs looked sad. Taste wise, it was okay but it wasn’t wow. The presentation could of been much better, and again, not sure if it’s suppose to be vintage related, but just plain white plates would have been better.
I know it was miserable outside which didn’t help, but the lighting and brightness was dark. Cobwebs and rested dust on lights, overhead fan, windowsills and other places. Floor needed a good sweep and tables needed cleaning. It wasn’t exactly busy so one of the ladies could have swept and cleaned the tables as soon as people left.
Most of the chairs were stained, the wallpaper shows wear and tear, and the bathroom tiling looked unpleasant.
Stopped here to break a long journey and had a fabulous lunch. Great food, all freshly made, great service, and even happy to cater for our fussy child. If passing this way again we will definitely be back.
Our first choices were sold out, but what we ordered was amazing - fresh sandwiches with DEEP fillings, salad & a crescent of crisps!
Very reasonable price & lots of options on the menu.
Definitely recommend & will be back.
This tearoom is in a beautiful building (free parking in front and behind) - very small - seated quite close. It was packed when we visited at 12.15 on a Saturday. You can reserve a table online though. I ordered the club/avocado sandwich - it was huge I just about finished it. All sandwiches etc are served with crisps, coleslaw and salad. We had a pot of tea each and all together it was about £13 each, great price. Staff friendly and attentive - we will definitely be visiting again.
Warm welcome for me and my dog, Tess, yesterday; Came back today!
Lovely cup of tea and a sweet bun. Perfect stop off, on the way to/back from Essex coast. Tyvm.
Lovely hidden gem with a great aesthetic and atmosphere. I only stopped for a coffee, but the cakes they started to bring out on my way out looked delicious, so regretful I didn't stick around.
BEWARE! Lack of value and respect for employees
Sharing this to help others make informed decisions about working at Tea on the Green.
My wages were considerably late, with my December wages arriving on January 8th without prior notice or clear communication.
My scheduled working days were altered without proper notification or acknowledgement of the initial agreement. When I addressed it, the owner was cold, confrontational and not honest, and a couple of hours later fired me via text.
During 7 hour+ shifts, breaks were expected to be taken standing in the small kitchen, helping out if needed, and when I requested a daily 15 minute seated lunch break in my car, I was met with hostility. This is not a legal break.
The staff turnover rate was notably high, and I had warnings from former employees I know about how badly the owner treats staff.
Unfortunately, in my experience, you are not respected or valued at Tea on the Green. I hope this insight helps those considering Tea on the Green for employment.
