????Barbican
???? £6.20 Paulaner
❤️ An oldschool beer lover’s paradise.
.
The Sutton Arms, not to be confused with the Sutton Arms on Carthusian Street is located right in the heart of Clerkenwell and close to Barbican and Farringdon. The nearest Tube is Barbican which is a five minute walk.
.
This pub was built in 1848 and is named after a 17th century businessman Thomas Sutton. Sutton was the founder of The London Charterhouse which is located a few minutes walk away. This pub is an independent Freehouse that has been run by the same family since the early nineties.
.
This is a long and narrow pub that is traditionally decorated with an oldschool vibe. Although this pub is narrow, the ambiance is bright and airy with light flooding through the large etched windows. The walls are painted white and have a mix of photos, certificates and chalkboards displaying the extensive list of beers and food available. No oldschool pub would be complete without a proper red pub carpet.
.
The beer selection here is vast, diverse and showcases keg and cask beers from independent UK breweries and some from further afield. I had a pint of Paulaner which is a favourite of mine, my pint hit the spot and price point was average. During the month this pub hosts Tap Takeovers and also has beer of the week promotions. If you’re feeling a bit peckish, the food offering is Pies. There is a selection of meat, vegan and veggie to choose from, most pies cost around £6.
.
I visited around 4pm on a Sunny Friday afternoon back in July. The atmosphere was calm and relaxed with a couple of punters both inside and out. The service was great, the member of staff was all smiles and courteous.
.
The @suttonarms is a beer lovers paradise and can rival any London pub for beer diversity and choice. It is also a great place to spend time in, there is a nostalgic pub feel here. If you know your IPA’s from your Pale Ales and love an oldschool boozer, this is a must visit pub.

This is a proper pub.
Some of the best kept beer in London, great selection, helpful staff, family run, dog friendly!
Well worth a visit if you're in the Clerkenwell area. Attracts a large after-work crowd but also open on weekends (though not late) when the vibe is more relaxed.
One of the best pubs in London. Always a fantastic selection of cask ales, kegged beers and ciders representing some of the greatest modern breweries. Everything is kept in exceptional condition too. Not to be confused with the other (Fuller’s owned) Sutton Arms round the corner on Carthusian Street, this place is completely independent and run by a father and son
A great selection of excellent continental lagers which is rather difficult to find these days. Reasonable prices. Welcoming service as well.
Great pub. Nice local feel. Carpeted. Excellent range of beers across cask, keg and bottle/can. Definitely a focus on good quality breweries. Fair prices. Decent service. They have some good-looking pork rolls and what not available but we weren’t eating on our visit. I look forward to returning here before too long.
I seem to only hit this place on Sundays, which is a weird time of the week to be in this part of the city. It's a ghost town, shops are boarded up, the markets are closed and the stations are empty. You're lucky if the tubes or trains are even running, but on this occasion a brisk walk from Waterloo with a detour en route to see Pavement in Camden meant it didn't matter. Support independent and that, make a trip of it.
The quietness was felt indoors too, only a small group there on arriving, a few more outside on leaving, all tucking into the sausage rolls or pies served from the hot counter. I opted for one myself to soak up the @neptunebrewery tap takeover I'd stumbled across, and worked my way across the various cask offerings. Each half was exceptional, conditioning perfect, and rounded off with a sneaky pint of Lightbulb from Verdant.
The interior feels "old school", it's not that faux-industrial vibe "craft" pub, you're not sat on oddly spaced uncomfortable chairs, and it doesn't look like an identikit central London refurb. It's a joy, a snapshot of simpler times.
I perched at the bar, which apparently seemed to be a contentious decision. I took it as my cue to leave once the jabs about being sat in a "staff seat" didn't let up, and made the vibe weird, despite empty ones either side of me. I suppose that's part of the allure sometimes, the personality of the pub extends beyond that of the pub building itself.
Thankfully the beer selection here is some of the best, if not the best in the area, and perhaps London itself. I'd make the trip back again, and encourage you to do the same, try venturing to the quieter areas on weekends and support those that need it most. I'll be sure to keep myself to myself next time though.
This was a great find! A proper, old school boozer, close to Farringdon Station but slightly tucked away.
Great selection of well-kept real ales, a friendly landlord, and the feel of a locals’ pub. A few seats outside to enjoy the sunshine - what more could you want?!
Not many proper pubs left in the area, so definitely worth supporting.
Always a splendid spot to visit, close to my old Uni. Landlord is a real nice guy and certainly has also let me and my mates feel welcome. Great selection on tap, in combination with the great appearance of the place makes it more than easy to come back again and again.
