The old RAF airfield site is now agricultural farmland, but the perimeter for taxiing and remains of main centre runway still exist. The perimeter can be walked or cycled and makes for a circuit of several miles where hard standings and several old hangers can be seen. From the centre runway took-off Major Howard and his unit in three gliders towed by planes on night of 5th June 1944 heading towards Normandy to become first Allied fighting men to enter France on D-Day. They would successfully capture and hold the bridge that would become Pegasus Bridge along with nearby Orne river bridge. SOE also flew agents from here during Second World War and the airfield remained in use post-war.
Lovely place to take the dog for a walk!
Small amount of carparking. Beautiful place to take a hour or 2 walking around. Take own food and drink and a bag to take your rubbish home! Outstanding views but can get windy
Was one of the airfields used for Operation Market Garden. Also has the memorial to those who were involved in SOE operations. Peaceful place to remember those who flew from here never to return home.
A great place to walk , lovely views across the airfield. A memorial close by with lots of interesting information about the history of the airfield.
3.5 mile circuit on good level ground. Weather was gorgeous so a really nice walk. Seats on the way round but take a drink if it's hot like today!
It's stunning. Beautiful fields of wheat and sky as far as the eye can see! Amazing for kite flying and so quiet!
"Christmas Day Lost RC Plane !"
Beautiful, clear, crisp, sunny, late morning with very light breeze. Perfect conditions, (we thought) for my son to fly Santa's Christmas gift. How it got down the chimney we will never know! Our inexperience was realised 15 minutes in. Do not fly high! Do not have any breeze! Wear strong sunglasses! The plane disappeared into the bright low winter sun. With 10 minutes flight time at 40 miles an hour. It is like a message in a bottle, without the message. Final mistake - No contact details on the plane! Last seen heading towards Badbury Rings, though could be anywhere! Thank you to all those sympathetic passers-by. Seems to be a great place for views, walking and to meet nice people...
Plane is white and yellow 20" wing span, if anyone spots it. Someone could make a young 9 year old boy very happy again!
