Best KPortal Reviews
I like the food a lot and the people serving are very friendly and remember you.
My favourite dishes are the huss (aka rockfish), as well as the chicken breast, which is very tasty. Similar to KFC. Not exactly the same, but pretty damn close.
I like the chips because they're slightly crispy on the outside and not saturated with oil despite them being thick chipshop chips as opposed to fries from McDonald's, Burger King, etc.
Asking for just salt helps with the crispiness of the chips as well, since you can always add vinegar at home. If they add vinegar in the shop then it makes the chips go soggy. And the longer it takes for you to get home, the soggier they get.
The chip portions are enormous. Even a small portion is huge, so I sometimes ask for half a small portion, which is just right for me. They're very accommodating like that.
Strangely they don't do gravy though, which is odd for a chippy. I wish they did.
They do curry sauce though, which I like with saveloy & chips when I'm in the mood for that sort of thing.
I wish they did corn on the cob to go with the chicken though. Plus gravy goes well with chicken & chips as well.
I also wish the portions of mushy peas were twice the size. Or at least give customers the option of different sizes.
As for atmosphere, as I said the people working there are very friendly, but as for the place itself it feels really dated and old-fashioned, from the faded Pic Ups sign outside to the star-shaped card signs stuck to the wall, and the main menu itself.
I definitely wouldn't want a pretentious gastropub-type makeover, but by the same token, it would be totally possible to smarten the place up without going down the pretentious route. Just a better sign outside, a better-looking menu, and doing away with the tacky-looking star-shaped card signs stuck to the wall would make a big difference.
I've been using Pic Ups all my life. I've had chips from many different places over the years. I always compare them to Pic Ups. Not many can match them. If you ask nicely, they'll double fry them for you too! The fish is always crisp and tasty, the burgers are good, and I the pukka pies are better here than anywhere. Top chippy grub, no fluff. Amy runs a great shop! Park just down the road in the free public car park.
The best chips in Sussex by miles. I asked why the other day and the owner, Susan, explained it is mainly to do with using the best available potatoes from trusted suppliers. Her portions are very generous too, and the welcome always very warm.
Love this place so much - my favourite takeaway in the world. The staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming, they always ask after the family and we have a nice catch up. Great value - and the best fish and chips I’ve ever had. Can’t recommend highly enough !!
Polite and helpful service, with generous portions.
Lovely staff, well cooked food most generous portions in Crowborough
Great food good service!
My first visit to Pick Ups last night for a medium cod and medium chips. My God what a portion, almost beat me. Cod was perfectly cooked and just fell apart, batter nice and crisp. The chips were lovely and soft and easy to eat. Will definitely be going back there, but it's a shame that I live in Eastbourne.
