Best KPortal Reviews

Excellent food for the price, cheaper than we expected. Had a dedicated whisky menu which we loved ???? service was perfect. Great vibe, albiet kind of quiet (I suppose it was a Wednesday). Definitely recommend going!
Rip Off.
Be careful you don’t get ripped off at the bar.
We bought 2 pints of Neck Oil Beer and were charged £14.07.
The alarm bells started ringing as you can’t divide £14.07 by 2.
We then queried the price of 1 pint and was told it was £7.04 a pint.
This still didn’t compute as that meant the 2 beers should have been £14.08 (last week a pint was only around £6.40, which is still expensive).
So we bought another 2 beers. We were served by a different barman this time.
We were charged £14.07 again.
We queried it once more and was told that the bar staff had been told to add a 5% service charge.
Normally in bars where there’s a service charge, you get asked if you want to pay it.
Well not in this pub. Not forgetting we were sitting at the bar, so how they could justify a 5% enforced, secret service charge is mystifying.
We then bought another 2 pints from a different member of bar staff and we were charged £13.40 this time (I have uploaded a picture showing this).
No service charge was applied.
All credit to this barman.
We then drunk our 2 pints and moved on elsewhere.
We weren’t staying in a bar that was happily ripping off its customers.
£6.40 is expensive enough for a pint of beer, but adding on a secret service charge to make it £7.04 is just a slap in the face to customers.
So if you don’t want ripped off then AVOID THIS BAR.
(I very seldom leave negative reviews as you can see from my account, but in this case it is justified. Most of my reviews are 5 star reviews)
Nice venue with good music. Just be aware if you’re making a large booking not all guests will get a seat. Group of 20, we were gave a table for 6 and told it is in the terms and conditions (which fair enough it may be). Make sure you know this before booking as other tables were caught out too
This is a nice place....very classy with a decent atmosphere, BUT, when I bought two pints of beer at the bar I was overcharged compared to the printed menus. After mentioning this (very politely) I was told (again very politely by the top class staff) that a. The menus must be out of date and not prices couldnt be current......and....b. That there was an automatic 5% service charge - even if you buy at the bar. THIS IS SURELY WRONG. You need to be told that prior to either purchasing or paying! The rating would have been a five star but for this. Admin/head office needs to review these two points.
Beautiful building, and interior. Staff friendly and attentive. We ordered from brunch menu, and all 3 of us very happy with our food. Reasonably priced - would happily visit again.
Service slow despite not being busy although some staff very attentive. Turkey v dry but prepared fresh when we complained. V variable pudding size which angered colleagues on our works do out.
Booked an afternoon cream tea but what a disappointment!! Do not understand the reviews on this site! We were seated in the general bar, not a dedicated area for cream teas as we had incorrectly assumed. The cream tea turned up with stale sandwiches served by a scruffy waiter in jeans and denim shirt. These were replaced but the scruffy waiter never returned to check that everything was alright or apologise. The large pot of tea, clearly for two had one teabag in it. We asked for a second pot with this waiter but it didn't materialise and we had to see a separate waitress who produced it very quickly, explaining that they were short staffed, not acceptable on a busy Sunday afternoon..... clearly the waiter had forgotten about us. The scones were adequate but certainly not fresh and the pot of cream had to be rationed out !! The bill was reduced upon paying, so the staff were clearly aware of the inadequacies of both service and staff, but no apology or explanation was given...although they didn't forget to add 10% gratuity.
We left feeling deflated, after looking forward to a nice afternoon treat and would not recommend this venue.
Shambolic tbh, no one at bar but waited over 16 mins for drinks to arrive.
Staff in toilet with no washing before exit and to top it off they try to use a service charge!!
Don't deserve a rating at all - Abismall for Edinburgh.
Avoid!!
