We took the CalMac Ferry at Kennacraig terminal to Askaig, Islay. The ferry staff was very friendly. They offer hot food (fish and chips, lentil soup, etc.) and cold food (beer, cold cuts, sandwiches, etc.) on the ferry. Personally, we had been traveling for quite a few days so we had snacks in our backpacks.
The terminal itself is pretty isolated from shops, restaurants or inns. The ride from Kennacraig to Askaig took about 2.5 hours. The ferry was very puntual. They started loading our cue of cars exactly as scheduled. Don't be late. Have fun!
First time I have used this ferry, (CalMac Ferry from Kennacraig terminal to Askaig, Islay.) what can I say, clean, pleasant staff and the on board menu had a good choice. I went for the Haddock, Chip and Peas which was excellent, just couldn't eat it all, I did try. I can't wait for the return trip to try something else off the menu.
Loading and unloading the vehicles was quick and a pleasure compared to some ferries I have used.
The CalMac ferry terminal at Kennacraig : offers basic amenities with staff that doesn't lose touch of their sense of humor even in critical situations. The terminal itself is located in the middle of nowhere, no shops, restaurants or inns around, but you wouldn't need them hopefully if you're taking a ferry to Port Ellen or Askaig.
A bit expensive / but is the only way to get to islay by car. You can also change the ferry free of charge (great plus!) Otherwise a normal ferry ...
Very disappointed after leaving a £500 jacket on board the Finlaggan going from Kennacraig to Islay. I’m not buying it that one of the old age pensioners that were sat next to us in the far corner of the eating area had taken my jacket which also had £1200 of holiday cash in the pockets. We were last to leave the ferry so it’s unlikely that there were even any passengers left
on board that would have passed my seating area after we headed down to our car. Kennacraig were very unhelpful in responding to my requests to check lost property. It’s my opinion that a member of staff found my jacket, checked the pockets and decided to keep it.
Exceptional poor customer service, bordering on rude. Travelling to Islay for a week of cycling so leaving car at terminal. No car parking spaces left. Staff told me they cannot help - it’s my responsibility to find somewhere else to park. No offer of help or empathy to the difficult situation I’m faced with. Ferry terminal is 4 miles from nearest town. Parking always tight but in the past Calmac staff couldn’t have been more helpful and always found a space somewhere on site. Times have changed - and so have the staff! Shame.
Handy to park up the night before.
Friendly staff too.
Arrived and checked in easily with no contact. On a motorcycle and was last to board, frustrating as was here early. Suppose this is how they must do it
