I came to you guys this week about 2:30am (Thurs night/Fri morning) as I have had severe asthma for a while which took a turn for the worst recently.
On arrival to the emergency department I was:
- Severely breathless
- Barely about to speak because i was struggling to breathe
- In shock
- Triaged by a nurse who was not paying attention to me and was talking to her colleagues while ignoring my results it seemed
- Unable to eat, sleep or eat properly and that had been going on for a few days prior as well.
- Sweating
I MADE THE NURSE WHO TRIAGED ME FULLY AWARE OF THIS AND SHE EVEN TOLD A COLLEAGUE BEHIND HER THAT I WAS BREATHLESS.
Why was I left as absolute last priority??
I arrived at 2:30am and stayed waiting until 7:30am; still watching others arrive and left before me still from arriving at 5am??
I ended up leaving the hospital at 7:30am Friday morning unseen and panicked, still struggling to breathe.
I got hold of my GP 8:30am Friday morning in hysterics about what to do. Luckily my GP was kind enough to book me an urgent appointment with herself and a nurse that morning.
I had to be administered 2 oxygen tanks at my GP office as upon quick examination they realised and confirmed my condition was indeed life threatening.
My Dr was worried about my conditoin so bad that she insisted I took my situation even more seriously than i already had.
How many others???
Was left for hours in a hallway and then right by triage underneath a bright light while in pain.then after 9 hours moved to an all male room . As a female with gynecological issues this is not acceptable. No empathy from staff in e.d . Was ignored and treated with zero compassion. I'd rather die at home then go back here.disgraceful
I walked in for a suspected broken finger at 10am on a Saturday and I was immediately seen by the receptionist. They arranged a lovely St John's helper to fill in the forms for me as I couldn't write. Then the on duty doc had a quick look and have me some pain killers. Then i was taken Into a room to see a doctor, then x-rays, then results and a splint. Next thing I knew I was home with a prescription. All and all it was about 2 hours which is much quicker then I expected. Thank you!
I have nothing but thanks and praise for every person that helped me in the ED after a life threatening accident.
I was prioritized right to the top so sorry to others who were waiting, don't blame staff for any wait you had, they were amazing.
I arrived with my injured hand around midday. ED was very busy, I was assessed within half an hour, after that I waited for approximately three hours to be seen by a doctor. I can honestly say that I was treated with respect and sympathy by all the staff. I wouldn't want to go to ED to often but all things considered I'm really glad that they are there to help. I give them all five stars for being there for idiots like me who cut themselves badly .

My 14 month old baby suddenly developed shiver and high fever, weak and irresponsive for few minutes. Called regular gp who suggested I call ambulance. Ambulance said they are busy but insisted I take him to emergency to be seen by a doctor. Rachael who was the triage nurse did not triage correctly and we waited 5 hours and decided to leave after not being called. In the 5 hours his temperature increased, he vomited, became more tired and every time I went to check how long its going to take, received nothing but incorrect wait times and stories. My son vomited on my wife and me and we were waiting there like that, which was seen by the nurse. Although this was noted in system nothing happened. After 2 hours wait I was advised he is second on the list. But about 7-8 patients who came after were called before us after I was told that we were second to be seen. Even just before leaving also I checked and I was told I was second in queue. So I dont know what system is this where you remain at the same spot for hours while people come and go from and through the queue.
Sadly priority is questionable in this hospital as people with no life threatening symptoms do constantly get ahead of you. Dare to say that you have to lie to prioritize? Pity as nurses were ultra kind. The priority system should have ONLY two settings: priority number (unless your dedicated doctor is yet to be available) or if other coming after you have life threatening symptoms. That's it. 3 and a half hour wait on average is unacceptable.
I went in at 9am on a Friday and was so impressed with how efficient, excellent and caring all the staff were. From the front desk to the surgeon. The nurses were amazing. I'm so grateful to you Hutt ED and Surgical your actions truly felt life saving. You didn't muck around.
