Very dated premises although looked clean. We ordered 5 meals , 4 adult and 1 child meal. The portions were shockingly anemic , hardly any chips for the adult meals and with a normal sized box it looked very bad. The chips were not cooked and still hard and the batter was very greasy. The fish was of a good size but again the batter was like sludge in the bottom of the box.
We’ve had several meals from here over the years but after this one that’s it for us, never again. And to top it off £42.90 for a haddock supper, 3 jumbo sausage suppers and a kids meal. Absolute rip off.
The main issue is the opening hours and reliability. Arrived this evening at 18:55 after a fifteen minute drive, and despite Google saying last orders is 19:15, they were closed. Not accepting card payments is also a hassle. A fish supper is decent enough, sometimes excellent, but again, a bit hit and miss re: whether both fish and chips will be good.
Nice enough place, but cash only. Fishcakes are £3.60, but for two huge ones. Don't get caught-out and expect small ones. They've never heard of Saveloys, but might know them as 'smoked sausages' even though they aren't on the menu. Also 'supper' means the item, but with chips eg sausage supper is sausage with chips.
Have previously had 3 or 4 fish suppers here with no problems - decent fish and well cooked chips. This time the fish was very dried out as if it had been reheated - a big disappointment.
Visited this chippa for years, definitely worth a visit if you want a tasty takeaway. Portions are a good size often enough for 2 people sharing
This was probably the worst fish dinner we have ever had. The portion size is fine, the establishment is fairly clean.
The fish is part cooked and then stuck on a rack until someone orders it. Then refried. This leads to the driest, toughest chewy fish in a soggy bottomed batter. The consistency of the batter was soggy underneath and like sun dried cardboard on top.
Unfortunately this meal that cost £36 was so awful I threw it away before it even occurred to me to take a photograph of it.
My wife tried to soften her fish with the curry sauce we had to wait 10 minutes for, but to no avail. It was still grim.
Food is not too bad. The huge frustration is the awful opening times. 7pm closing for a chip shop??!!!??! That's INSANE! A lot of people will work till 6pm and commute or even be held on late at work. These are exactly the people who will want to make up for the disorganised evening by having a quick feed but they're closed at 7pm! The market for a chip shop is to cater for people at meal times and the convenience of take away food is often only needed if the preparation of food yourself is not possible due to shortage of time or delays in your evening. Therefore the need to have a take away is often later than one would otherwise have a non take away meal. Why therefore do they close at the prime of meal time? Such a waste. Also, 21st century and global pandemic, what's with the cash only facility?! Card is easier, safer, lower insurance, more convenient. Food for thought Frank.
Ordered 2 Fish suppers for my friend and I, the chips were fine but the actual fish we both couldn’t eat..,
