This fourth generation Pie & Mash shop is one of the originals, and the brand name dates back as far as 1841. The Hoxton branch is located approximately 15 mins walk from Old Street Station, and its traditional green frontal is not hard to miss.
Upon arrival, there was no queue to enter. Service was quick and friendly with the usual can drinks on offer. I went for the standard Double-Double, which came to £13.50 with a drink. There was a portion of liquor under both pies, but i feel a little more could have been provided. Pies were pipping hot, but I felt the meat was over seasoned and more salty than usual.
As soon as you enter you enter a mobile black spot, but maybe that's a good thing to encourage good old-fashioned conversation. Plenty of locals about and always a friendly face behind the counter. It won't be long before I return
A time capsule of work-class London. No fancy decorations, just proud family memories. Calm and friendly service.
We came here to try the historic jellied eel. It’s actually nice, better than the appearance. Not fishy at all. Just natural flavor. I actually like the texture lol, especially as someone who loves fish skin. I can actually imagine it in a Michelin star restaurant with British history theme— transparent jelly, floating piece of eel, flowers, drop of liquor sauce lol.
The pie is also unique. Not the more common pub versions. Looks and tastes like minced beef dumpling soaked in parsley soup. Mash is nice, solid potato and not too oily with extra cream or butter.
Chili vinegar is tasty.
The pie can be slightly warmer though.
Without doubt one of the best Pie and Mash in London. Pies are crammed full of fresh meat and liquor is top notch. Always served with a smile. Love it here.
i travelled through half of london to eat at this lovely establishment and it was 100% worth it! lady at the counter was friendly and sweet to us, even warning me about bones in eels so that i dont choke :) (she did offer to do cpr in case that happens tho) food was simple but just lovely, the eels are so delicate that they melt in your mouth and they pair amazingly with liquor, which is parsley sauce. if you are a fan of stronger flavours, however, make sure to ask for chilli vinegar ???? overall, great place with history and definitely a highlight of my trip to london
Quality place, highly recommend. As you can see, the pies were completely gone after I saw them! The staff were extremely friendly too. Delicious and 10/10.
Been waiting a long time but finally got to try pie mash and liquor it was fantastic the lady serving was amazing thanks so much it was a pleasure talking with you definitely going return
Had a great experience here, with Charlotte being an amazing host. As it was my first time to London, I wanted to visit F Cooke after seeing it on YouTube. The store was quiet as I came in right after it opened, so Charlotte sat down with me while I ate and shared the history of the restaurant and the area. It was a great conversation
The food was simple and very tasty. I got a pie and mash & jellied eels and finished it all along with a coffee. What a great experience!
I’ll be back someday!
My first pie & mash, with jellied eels! Very tasty, proper old school. Definitely recommend.
