We visited Holy Island quite early on and fancied a bit of breakfast and read that Chare Ends Cafe was a good place to go, especially as it was dog friendly. On arrival it seemed like it was closing, not much in the worktop fridges or cake displays but they had a good selection of perfectly light breakfasts on the blackboard. To keep it simple we asked for the beans on toast, it wasn't available and only breakfast sandwiches were available - so asked for their veggie sausage sandwich, again not available.. so after that we opted for the egg sandwich which it seemed all they had. I thought this was odd, considering their menu was quite light and small anyway. But, the sandwich was good. The atmosphere felt cold and empty to be honest but the staff seemed nice and friendly. When overhearing other people order at the till, it seemed they didn't have decaf coffee in either nor any of the meat options at that time (but was on the blackboard menu) it just didn't feel well stocked and felt like it was shutting down. For hot drinks and egg sandwiches to take out, I recommend. Sadly it didn't give us a feeling of wanting to return. Hopefully you may have a better experience.
Wait time to be served was ridiculous, 4th in queue and took 30 minutes to be served. When food did come waitress read the wrong number out and when we tucked in to our quiches they were disgusting. Very dry and tasteless and overpriced! Will avoid like the plague if we return to the island. There are better cafes around the corner!
Lovely staff today (31/12/2024), delicious food and great coffee.
I had the stilton Soup with a proper bread roll and it was excellent, very warming on a winters day.
Also the homemade fruitcake that was equally delicious, with very good coffee.
I took a big sausage roll away too, equally tasty.
Good prices too.
Just along from the car park, I do recommend.
The cafe has clearly taken advantage of the fact it is situated in tourist hot spot Holy Island with its eye wateringly overpriced products. We got 2 prawn marirose sandwich’s (£10 each), a cappuccino and a coke for £25.70. The sandwich’s were basically a salad sandwich with a few prawns and honestly shouldn’t have costed more than £5 (at a push). The cappuccino was basically an americano with a slight milk foam on top that did not taste very good which was massively dissapointing. The atmosphere itself was dreary and bland and just didn’t feel like a very comfortable place to enjoy a lunch. The staff were nice enough but with no real personality. This place felt more like a conveyor belt rather than an enjoyable lunch outing where they will charge an arm and a leg for nothing remotely satisfying. My advice would be to try elsewhere or bring your own lunch when coming to Holy Island.
The cafe looked great but the price spoilt our day somewhat!
We paid £53 for:
2 x half crab subs (as shown in photo) we’d seen the prices but assumed we would get a whole sub each and maybe a bit of salad with it. You get half a sandwich with no accompaniment for over £10!
2 x small filled bagels - one coronation chicken and one cheese and ham
1 x cheese and ham baguette
2 x bottles of plain water
We even had to pay £1.50 for each portion of ‘salad’ which was 3 slices of cucumber, a few leaves, and a tablespoon of coleslaw.
The bagels and baguette did go down well with the kids but we were quite astonished by the price even in these times.
Don't wish to be mean but the sausage roll was like a 90's Makro 12p special; 10% mystery pig paste encased in baggy dry paper "pastry". Coffee was really weak and average. Daughter enjoyed the hot choc with squirty cream and mallows. Staff were lovely but overrall avoid or walk 1 min further to the P.O. for deliciousness
£15 for 2 Tetley’s Tea bags and some of the worst sausages I’ve ever come across. I can’t even identify the meat. Don’t come here.
Not a bad breakfast at all staff are friendly and it's a very clean place, but watch out for the man in the ice cream van
