We traveled a fair way to stay in Bodmin so didnt want to miss the chance to scale Cornwall's highest point. The ascent is relatively easy for any reasonably able walker, with the north west side being, from appearances, the easiest side to arrive from (Rough Tor Free Car Park).
We walked up the south east side (as part of a much larger loop walk around the area - there is lots to see) which seemed much further than it's opposite path but still not too taxing for most.
The views were as pretty as expected.
Side note: If you're visiting Brown Willy and are happy walking a little further, add Logan Rock to your visit and try rocking a big 'ole stone. Look it up, it's great.
One of my most favourite places in Cornwall. The landscape is stunning and the view from the top of the tor is absolutely breathtaking. Well worth using the free parking at Rough tor and hiking over to Brown Willy. I did a 10 mile hike around all of the tors and was blown away by beauty of the place.
Climbed this yesterday beginning at Rough Tor carpark. Very straightforward route to the top, I'm not sure how others have struggled to find the route, it's a well trodden and wide path. It can even be seen from Google maps satellite view when zoomed in. Lots of sheep, ponies and cattle grazing, all of which seem very used to people walking past at close proximity. Its a nice gentle incline until the last few meters of Brown Willy, my 8 and 13 year old managed it with ease. Strange thing was at the peak, where the carne is situated there was a huge cloud of midges, so we came straight back down off the peak.
We walked from Rough Tor car park. Up over Rough Tor and onto Brown Willy. A few stiles to get over as this part whilst accessible, is private and a protected site of scientific interest. Beautiful, peaceful moorland. Picnic at the top. Views that continue to live in your heart.
Its a cracking walk. Some beautiful far reaching views and in the snow they are something else. Plenty of families with young children so I'd suggest its a good family walk as long as you have fairly active children. There is livestock roaming so now and then you may need to leash your dog but apart from that they can run free for miles.
Parking is limited to about 25 cars though people are now using the verges but you may want to arrive early to get a space as its highly popular
Great for a hike, walking your or a picnic. The views of the moors are stunning, from Brown Willy you can see two reservoirs. We parked at the national trust car park for Rough Tor around 4.5 mile round trip. Highly recommended.
Enjoyable hike up and down Rough Tor and Brown Willy. Bit tricky to remember the turning and parking is limited.
Beautiful hike, about 8km (5miles) loop from a car park. Can get wet and muddy so good hiking shoes are a must!
