With respect are Google Reviews loosing the plot!! Why can’t I review towns, villages or hamlets like I used too! Bigbury-on- sea is essentially a hamlet in an idyllic setting with the famous luxury art-deco Burgh Island Hotel sitting just offshore with its sea tractor taxi for high tide access making it essentially an island together with the Medieval Pilchard inn and the famous ‘look out’ stone hut on top of the hill that was used to identify the mackerel and pilchards that used to proliferate there and relay it back to the fishermen! it’s been long over fished. The un prepossessing non tarmacadam car park is the hamlet!! There is an excellent shop on the site as well as a beach cafe and toilets at beach level. it’s quite expensive to park there. The beach is fabulous adjacent to Bantham and is vast, facing East and West. There were a lot of surf borders in evidence. The whole area is very understated, I could see no deck chair concessions. The sea is freezing until late August and a lot of people were wearing wet suits. There is a private golf club close by. Without doubt this is a premier location if you can face the horrid narrow lanes to get there!
Really good place to visit. The car park is huge and there's an overflow nearby. The parking meters didn't always work when we visited but you can pay with Ringo.
Theres a cafe and a shop and public toilets. The ramp down to the beach is very steep and might be a challenge for anyone with a wheelchair or a pushchair. There's a sea tractor that goes over to the island about once an hour or so and sometimes theres a cart selling coffee and snacks.
Would highly recommend paying a visit here, it's a really stunning location.
At this time of year,we had the massive car park to ourselves. There is a nice cafe here open all year round and toilets ,the beach is 50 metres away, very nice but it is very busy in high season.
Cool café with vegan options, the sea tractor is a fun experience.
Absolutely stunning location for a wonderful day out. Plenty of paid parking. Little cafe whete you can get snakes, ice cream and drinks. Clean toilets available. Steps down to the beach. Huge beach for everyone. Highly recommended.
Lovely beach and great place to visit. Seemed to be plenty of spaces not overly expensive. Had been to Salcombe but couldn't find any where to park. Had a lovely time on Bigbury beach. Shame the cafe was shut as no where to get drinks or Icecreama etc. Best take your own picnic. They allow dogs on the beach here.
Only down side is the roads to get there are a bit narrow in places so need to be a confident driver or stock up on valium.
It was absolute chaos on our visit. Ticket machines not working and those that did, would not take card payments. You need to go old school, have coins or use the app. The only problem being, getting a phone signal so the app can work.
My advice would be to ignore the first car park and head straight to the overflow carpark up the hill instead. There's more room and less chance of a door ding. Plus you can get a signal to pay for your ticket as the masses squabble over the main carpark spaces below.
Bring your own food and drink too, as on our visit there was only one small cafe and the queue was quite ridiculous for January.
Bigbury-on-Sea is beautiful but extraordinarily busy in the Summer. I'm local & prefer to visit out of season. Great for Agatha Christie readers.
