Lovely little village to wander around in taking in the stunning views. There are a few little shops, coffee shops, pubs, restaurants and a chippy. Also there is Cadwalladers' ice cream shop, which is just gorgeous ???? my favourite ice cream shop in Wales. Amazing selection of ice creams and hot and cold drinks.
Cute little welsh village , looking light straight out of a Disney movie . It is definetely to be recommended. I came there with a group of international students as part of our summer school in Liverpool. It is very peaceful and easily walkable. No need to use any public transport as all the places , be it the river , the small town or churches are easily in walkable distance. It is very touristy though , so you have to be prepared to pay hefty prices at the restaurants and souvenir shops. The locals are very welcoming and friendly. I’d come back any time!
Betws-y-Coed, meaning “prayer-house in the wood” in Welsh, is a charming village and community nestled in the Conwy valley within Snowdonia National Park. Let me take you on a journey through its rich history and natural beauty:
Historical Origins:
The name Betws-y-Coed is thought to refer to the 14th-century St. Michael’s Church, where ancient yew trees have stood for around five centuries.
St. Michael’s Church served as the village’s main church until 1873 when the larger St. Mary’s Church was built on grounds belonging to Gwydir Castle.
Natural Splendor:
Set amidst the Gwydir Forest, Betws-y-Coed is cushioned by hills adorned with conifer trees.
It’s a popular base for walking holidays in Wales, with numerous river walks and mountain trails nearby.
Key Highlights:
Swallow Falls: Visit the nearby Swallow Falls, a spectacular waterfall where the River Llugwy cascades dramatically.
Conwy Falls: Explore the awe-inspiring Conwy Falls, located off the road to Pentrefoelas.
Fairy Glen: Discover the enchanting Fairy Glen, where the River Conwy flows through a narrow gorge.
Pont-y-Pair Bridge: Marvel at the historic Pont-y-Pair Bridge, built in 1468, which stands buffeted by foaming water after heavy rain.
Village Charm:
Betws-y-Coed was once renowned as an artist colony during Victorian times.
Craft and outdoor activity shops line the main street, Holyhead Road, offering outdoor clothing and equipment.
The 14th-century church of St. Michael’s is one of the oldest in Wales and is worth a visit.
Whether you seek tranquility, outdoor adventures, or a glimpse into Wales’ past, Betws-y-Coed welcomes you with open arms. ????????️
Great relaxing walk along the river into Betws-y-Coed, everyone friendly and welcoming, only down side was we only had 2 days to explore.
This was a beautiful town with lots to see and do. Many shops, places to eat and to stay. There was a lovely church and nice green areas. The river that passes through the town was impressive. There was plenty of parking areas. This would be a good place for couples or families with children. It is not far from many mountains, if you wanted to climb Snowdon.
Beautiful place to chill!
Water was clean in some areas and suitable for younger kids and parents to swim and have fun in summers. The place was crowded naturally with kid sun the water, diving in the water and sone people soaking the sun.
A very nice area with working and many food options. The water flowing in between makes a nice sound and it’s very soothing. Must visit to dip feet in the cold water.
Nice village in stunning location. We went the day after it had rained for nearly 48 hours straight, so the amount of water flowing through the village and under the bridge was spectaculair!
Beautiful area
We went to the waterfall which is £2 per person, you can pay by card.
Good carpark. Accessibility throughout the area, lots of places in the local town to war.
We picked a trail off the beaten track and it was GORGEOUS. Quiet, noone in sight.
Will be returning!
