This site has not been cared for in a long time. The car park is being used as a storage area by the owner and has an abandoned car, a trailer and machinery in it. We stayed in hobbit 3 but very unwillingly. Having entered it was obvious it hadn't been cleaned in a long time, a plaster and a dirty tissue and someone else's hair were among the items were found when we gave it a brush down ourselves. For the price we didn't expect much but there are basics! The floor of the pod felt as though the wood underneath was damp or rotten. The toilet block was also dilapidated and appeared to be used again for storage as there were decorating supplies left by the sink. No soap and the lights in many stalls didn't work. We felt like leaving as soon as we arrived but given the price of last minute accommodation in the area felt compelled to stay. Absolutely avoid.
Thursday 19th of October 2023:
I booked this "Glamping" option called "Hagrid's House", because the weather conditions were not great for camping outdoors; amber warning, heavy wind and rain.
Received two automated messages about driving directions etc.
Arrived at 6pm, Check-In was said to be from 3pm to 7pm. Didn't see any info or Reception close by and the phone number provided by HotelsCom was not in use. The one Hostel building we tried was unlocked, but cold, dark and vacant inside. The Glamping side of the area looked like it's been out of order for some time (or years), if not entirely abandoned.
Received a confirmation of the booking from HotelsCom.
We thought that this must be some sort of low-budget self-service situation and decided to take a closer look at the "Glamping" area and its so called cabins. We found the hut that was supposedly ours, door was unlocked and the inside was in horrible condition. It's outrageous that you are even able to book this "Hagrid's House" at all. Photos attached.
We were already getting stressed, frustrated and tired, so we decided not to stay in this sketchy place any longer and booked another accommodation through HotelsCom and started driving straight away.
After arriving at the new hotel, I noticed a message which had arrived whilst I was driving, stating that they had "transferred" us to Hostel Room 5 "due to weather and water problems"... What a knee-slapper!
Too little too late though, because we had already wasted precious time and my partner was not in the best health for us to wait outside in the rain for things to be somewhat arranged.
We were literally joking that we're in a b-class horror movie when we were wandering there in the dark with the storm and everything. We just didn't want to stay and find out what's gonna happen to us.
This site appears to have been abandoned by the owner. No staff around, no indication about how you might find anyone, no reception, no signage. Bumped into a few confused people who couldn't find their room and didn't know what to do. A wrecked car in the car park gave a bad first impression. Untidy grounds, litter, abandoned washing facilities. Dilapidated, broken and rotting cabins which smelled very musty inside. I was genuinely surprised when hot water came out of the hot tap in the bathroom. On a positive note the riverside setting is delightful and there were no midges (late July). Ideal for kids to play in the river because it's small and gentle.
Not deserving of a high rating as the cabin was a little tired. Its funky shower needed replacing as the screen had been changed for a cheap curtain, the bed is is tired and uncomfortable and not clean enough for the current climate. After recleaning and warming the place up we struggled with the small fridge freezer and whilst the kitchen equipment was provided it was tired and the two pans were worn out.
It's steep access on the side of the hill did provide a good view of the mountain opersit but lacked any association with Lochness that was a car trip away to explore.
Didn't meet the owners as we tried to stay away from others due to Covid but did feel we had overpaid for what was provided but ended up leaving a day earlier for a good night's sleep in a hotel before heading home.
It is a lovely location and the area is nice but the rooms are not nice smells badly of mould that I couldn't breathe properly and book for one night but had to go home as its was badly smelling it was really dirty the only thi g that is clean is the toilet and the only security on the door was a key that didn't lock properly while all the other ones had fences and code locks so didn't feel very safe
I think this site might be abandoned? The bathrooms certainly looked that way and there's minimal space for pitching a tent even though it's advertised as a campsite. No one was there to greet us and we had trouble getting through on their numbers. We got such bad vibes we ended up packing up and heading somewhere else (much better).
Spending a couple of days here.
So far it’s been amazing. Very cosy the log cabin has everything you need. It’s brilliant. Can’t fault. Highly recommended
Beautiful, tranquil surroundings. Comfortable Glamping area surrounded by beautiful scenery, walks and plenty to do.
