Een regelrechte topper.
Uiterst vriendelijke eigenaren.
Rustig gelegen.
Heerlijk diner met een fantastisch dessert. Goed ontbijt.
Ruime kamer.
My wife and I were tracing my grandfather's experiences in WWI as he fought in and around the Argonne during 1918. I chose B&B Arara based on its central location to the battles that were fought here and b/c of its reputation. Also the owners have a great knowlege of the war and a lot of interesting pieces collected and on display in the house. But the real surprise was how comfortable and roomy the accomodations were and how welcoming and genuinely friendly Jann & Lenny (I'm spelling phonetically here) were. First of all be advised that the front of the house is deceiving as it is really a re-modeled barn and does not look like a typical B&B. Second, the address would not show up on my GPS but I found it by choosing the next address. Look for the big flag over the front door. If you do not ask to have dinner with them you are missing a great experience as Lenny is a great cook. Also, Arara gets the award for the most comfortable beds in 35 days of traveling through Europe. Only suggestion is that they might leave a hair blower in the bathroom for guests who don't like to frighten people in the morning. Also, the American monument to WWI soldiers is almost in their back yard and is great to hike to and climb to the top. What a view! And being so close you can visit it each evening, climb up and review where you were during the day. Thanks you two for being such great hosts. You made a special trip even more memorable.
Dont quite know what i thought, when I pulled up on my motorcycle outside Arara. But when I met the couple Who owns it, i found out, that i had hit jackpot! I was in the area to see historic places from WW1 (Verdun, Argonne etc. etc),they were very good at helping me, and they had a collectipn of memorabilia themselves. So if you want to go and se WW1 and Verdun, them Arara is perfectly placed and the nice couple is very, very good hosts.
My wife and I spent two weeks in March, 2016, driving through France, in a great circle clockwise from Paris to Verdun, then through Lorraine, Alsace, the Loire Valley, and Normandy. This was a pilgrimage, in this centennial year of Verdun, to see where my Grandfather had fought, been wounded, and decorated in 1918 in WWI, and where, not too far away, in the following war, my Father had fought, been wounded, and decorated in 1944 in WWII. Most of our trip was to new and unfamiliar places, and the high point of this journey of discovery was staying with Lenie and Jan Mulder at their Arara B&B at Montfaucon d’Argonne.||||Nobody has a better grasp of the lay of the land as it relates to the epic World War I battles that took place all around Montfaucon than do the Mulders. Their background as graphic artists is reflected in their extensive collection of WWI artifacts from both sides, tastefully displayed inside their B&B. Indeed, staying with the Mulders is like living inside your own, private, WWI museum. Any question you may have about places to visit, is quickly and happily answered through Jan and Lenie’s complete control of local map data, and their abundant reference books, brochures, maps, historic photographs, and documentary video segments, all of which they are happy to share with you. ||||Through their neutral, Dutch background, the Mulders are uniquely qualified to understand and to explain the German, as well as the American, French, and British, sacrifices made in the Great War. Jan and Lenie have especial familiarity with the American involvement in that great bloody struggle. The Arara B & B is at the epicenter of the “most American” part of what was the Western Front in 1918, and close to where the greatest and most tragic battles were ever fought on the European continent earlier in 1916.||||Jan and Lenie Mulder are a charming, friendly, generous, and very knowledgeable couple. They are both dedicated to understanding and sharing the history and the geography of the Great War. Our room was very comfortable, quiet and stocked with every item we needed. We took breakfast and dinner with the Mulders every day we stayed with them at their very comfortable B & B. Lenie also kindly packed us a picnic lunch for one of our exploration days far from any operating restaurant. Lenie is a world-class cook, and outdid herself day after day with very creative kitchen triumphs- many of which we had the pleasure of sampling for the first time. Come for the history- you’ll stay for the food!||||If you have an interest in the Great War, you must stay with the Mulders. There is no better base from which to explore the battlefields and monuments where the history of the world underwent epic changes a century ago than their Arara B & B. We came as strangers, but left as firm friends. We cannot wait to return. ||||Dillons, California, USA, March 30, 2016
