So went there last week to try this place out. First off it is very clean inside. The menu is very large with a great variety of different flavors and delicious food. So I tried the gyros plate. The meat was Soo delicious, not greasy at all. Had little bits of parsley and the slivered onions were incredible. Next is the pita ????. Warm soft flavorful and slightly toasted. Ok enough about that . Let's get to the meat which I loved. Super thinly sliced, slight char on outside. When you order the plate you get extra meat ,who doesn't like that ,,? Um no one. Next are the perfectly cooked French fries. You know the super skinny ones. Just the right amount of salt. Overall highly recommend you go there to get the Gyros plate. You will not be disappointed . They have been around for a long time , and they clearly got this one right. Do yourself a favor and your taste buds , get in your car and drive over for some of the best gyros you will ever have.Seriously just go. Right now. What are you waiting for. Just go .period
I have been going here since I was a little kid, and the gyros have always been outstanding. Ever since the new owners have come in, the gyros have changed. The tzatziki sauce is very watery and doesn’t have much taste, it needs to be thicker and include better ingredients for more flavor. The proportions are much smaller. I couldn’t finish my sandwich cause it was just not up to par and didn’t taste like normal. My father said these new gyros are borderline unacceptable, and I agree. I hope they listen to the public and change back the recipe or better it. Also miss the original Alex’s guy! Won’t be going back any time soon.
Was looking for a good gyro experience and today I found one. I could tell when I walked through the door that I was in the right place. 2 gyro rotisseries going and all brown and crunchy. The staff was older friendly guys who had been doing this for a long time. I asked the guy at the counter whats the best thing they had in the place and he immediately said The Gyro Plate. So when in Rome... We ordered and he told us to have a seat and in a moment our food was ready. A surprisingly large amount of food. The pita bread was soft and flavorful, the meat was not too salty or too garlicky or too greasy and the veggies were fresh. I liked that the meat was browned by the IR rotisserie and not fried up on the griddle. The parsley on the onions was refreshing as well. Large basket of fries that tasted like clean oil and potatoes. The tzatziki sauce was unique. Never had one like it. Yogurt based but, really different in a good way. The inside of the place was clean and smelled okay. And oh, they have their own home made giardiniera. Didn't try it yet but, I'll be back for something that requires a little of that on it.
Alex's has some of the best food in this area , there italion beefs are excellent and there gyros are superb the only complaint is there French frys , not so good but I've had worse and there prices are very reasonable I totally recommend Alex's , Chicago style at its best you won't be sorry .
What used to be a go to Greek fast food place l, is now run by a different ethnicity group. Ok what ever. But $29 for a gyro and cheeseburger? No just. No. That's outrageous. Whomever cashed out that right time cause we won't be back.
Alex sold out to New owners. It reminded me of an old wriglyville place growing up in Chicago. I just hope they don't change too much. prices are reasonable. Now they have funnel cake frys
Place used to be amazing before they sold. Now the prices are higher, portions are smaller, and they have a bunch of nasty tweakers working in the kitchen. Surprised I didn’t get sick. Food just looked depressing like nobody cares about their work. My suggestion would be to sell the place to someone who knows what they’re doing and clean house.
UPDATED 12/15/2023: The Alex's "guy" is no longer there. Now, the gyros have half the meat they used to and the fries have been limp and blah the last two trips here. Food still tastes good, but paying the same money for half the food doesn't cut it in my book.
Original Review: Great food and friendly staff. Building desperately needs a refresher, I'd never stay there and eat.
