Best soup I had in a while. The cake was an absolute banger. This really taste like home. And the owner are really cute.
Next trip in Schottland I will definitely come back.
A quirky, wonderful and delicious cafe. I really enjoyed talking to them and the food was perfect for a chilly March lunch; comforting, tasty and set me up for the afternoon of walking ahead. £20 and you get a feast - I don’t think you can go wrong. A genuine highlight of my day.
Food was amazing but maybe a little steep at £20 for lunch. But if you’re hungry at this point you’ll pay it. The owners are quirky, just don’t take everything Howie says seriously. Dry sense of humour that people may not understand. Sandra was lovely and welcoming.
£10 for camping is way too much though as you don’t get any facilities and don’t ask me where you have to do a number 2!!
All in all it was an experience.
My friends and I were walking the Great Glen Way and saw a series of signs advertising the amazing "lemon cake" and the variety of hot drinks they have on offer, including "ovaltine" and "hot cocoa". We had been walking quite far this day and had been easily tempted for a quick stop to rest our feet and enjoy a coffee and cake. After following signs for the "eco cafe", down a muddy off-road track, we entered what appeared to be an overgrown clearing with a few benches dotted around. My friends perched precariously on the edge of an outdoor rickedy bench whilst I ventured further to try and find the eco cafe to get some menus. After walking through a series of equally abandoned benches, and only two other customers, I came to a series of towering metal fences, like those used to protect building works, with a sign saying "please ring the bell". I rang the bell and as I was waiting for someone to appear, I took in the eco surroundings, and to me, an untrained eye, it looked like nothing more than a scrapyard. After a wee minute, a Scottish man then appeared and took a casual stroll over to speak to me through the fence. I asked whether we could see some menus. The reply was "I am the menu, what flavour are you after?" A moment of silence ensued as I must have looked visably confused. He further elaborated, "vegetarian, vegan, meat" then went on to further to the "Scottish flesh" he had on offer. Slightly taken a back, I reply we were only really after a coffee and cake. His response was that they only serve main meals as it's not worth "the farm" (an eco-campsite and cafe?) being open 365 days a year otherwise, to somehow justify how turning good business away from a clearly struggling cafe was a good idea. Ok I replied, no problem, we'll leave it then thank you. The man said his goodbyes and retreated back to his den and I left slightly bewildered. I return to my friends and start to explain the situation. Shortly, I am interrupted as the other two guests are served their soup (i.e THE main meal option) by both the man and another woman. We overhear these gentlemen asking about the price and the reply is that "it's all on the receipt", or in layman's terms, a massive rip off. The woman approaches us after serving these customers and asks us if we have changed our minds for food, we state again we were only really after a coffee and cake. She again restates the well rehearsed line of that they're only serving main meals to be open 365 days of the year and then informs us we are on private property and to politely, (although in not so many words) f*** off.
We make quick haste away and find two other walkers approaching the cafe for some drinks and inform them of our experience and they also turn away.
Seems like a ludicrous way to run a business but clearly they make up the money from the few guests they do pick and choose to serve.
Overall a rather comical experience. We likened it to a bit of a horror film and joked that the "flesh" was from their human "farm". Would recommend if you get a thrill out of feeling like you're about to be abducted or slaughtered, however if you're after a cafe experience this is not the right place for you. Rebranding necessary
Weird place .. looking like a left over scout camp, but the tea and cake is brilliant but quite expensive .
No prices... no menu...you will have to guess.
Really quirky place. Fun but strange...mainly strange
Absolutely beautiful!! Arrived late afternoon in the winter and it got really dark but it made it wonderfully creepy in the best way ????I will be back for sure! Cake and coffee amazing and the couple were so lovely!
This was an adventure and a memorable experience for us. Our 35 min walk up the hill from our accommodation took much longer .However it was well worth it.Wonderful views on the way and very scenic in the snow at the cafe.
Very freindly greeting and lovely to chat with the cafe owners.
Best hot chocolate we have ever had.
I think most people stopping off here are proper walkers. We were pushing a pram through the woods. ????
We will talking about this experience for years to come
This place is an absolute treasure. I passed the signs advertising the famous lemon cake on my way to Inverness and just had to try it out.
A really sweet place, lovely owners and the food was great as well. Especially the lemon cake of course! I will definitely come back one day!
